Peel Island Conservation Park Peel Island, Queensland 4184
About the Business
Welcome to Peel Island Conservation Park, located in the beautiful Redland City of Queensland, Australia. This establishment is not just a park, but a point of interest that holds immense cultural significance. Spread across 519 hectares, the island is surrounded by lush mangroves, with the exception of a stunning sand beach on the southern side known as Horseshoe Bay.
One of the most notable features of Peel Island Conservation Park is its historic ruins. Teerk Roo Ra, an integral part of the park, is the only intact multiracial lazaret in Australia. It was established in 1907 and served as a home for leprosy patients for over five decades. Prior to this, the island played a crucial role as a quarantine station from 1874 to the 1890s and as a residence for 'inebriates' from 1910 to 1916.
Preserving the park and its historic remains for future generations is of paramount importance. When visiting, we kindly request that you adhere to the guidelines put in place. Teerk Roo Ra was dedicated as a national park and conservation park under the Nature Conservation Act 1992 in December 2007. The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service has been diligently working towards preserving the island's historical artifacts and managing visitor access.
Furthermore, it is worth noting that on 4 July 2011, the Quandamooka Peoples #2 Native Title determination was acknowledged over land and waters surrounding North Stradbroke Island and Peel Island in Moreton Bay. This recognition included the Naree Budjong Djara National Park on North Stradbroke Island and Teerk Roo Ra National Park and Conservation Park on Peel Island. Today, the management of Teerk Roo Ra National Park and Conservation Park is a collaborative effort between the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC) and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS). Together, they strive to protect the cultural and natural values of the island for the benefit of all Queenslanders.
As you explore Peel Island Conservation Park, we encourage you to also discover the breathtaking regions of Queensland through Queensland Holidays, where you can find information on tourism across the state. By contributing to the preservation of Queensland's protected area system, you play a crucial role in protecting and nurturing our natural heritage.
Lastly, we would like to acknowledge the Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Owners and custodians of the land. We deeply respect their connection to the land, sea, and community, and pay our respects to the Elders, both past and present. The Department of Environment and Science is committed to upholding human rights, as outlined in the Human Rights Act 2019, and ensuring the protection and promotion of these rights.
Join us in experiencing the rich history, stunning landscapes, and cultural significance of Peel Island Conservation Park. Together, let us preserve this treasure for generations to come.

"We love to anchor here for a few nights through the week - it gets very busy on weekends. Just staying for lunch today though due to a moderate south easterly. A beautiful place regardless."
"Beautiful place!! We like it because the fishing is always good! Occasional dolphin sightings too!"
"Beautiful island for a day trip sail on the Hobie, but so incredibly sad to find 3 dead turtles on the beach in Horseshoe Bay - all victims of brutal collisions with boats. Can't something be done to put protection in place around their feeding grounds?"
"What a fantastic hideaway for shelter, walk the country beach, sim, kayak & fish. Also to meet up with friends"
"Great island for hiding from the wind (while on a boat). Camping allowed on 2 spots on the island. No fires allowed. Beach is good and tide goes out a long way, exposing the sand for over 100m. Toilets on the island. No water. No shops."
