Gheebulum Kunungai National Park, formerly known as Mulgumpin, holds significant cultural and historical importance. The park was renamed in 2021 to reflect its connection to the Quandamooka people, the traditional owners and custodians of the island. Gheebulum Kunungai translates to 'lightnings' playground' in the language of the Quandamooka people, highlighting the park's rich heritage.
The Wrecks campground is nestled next to a sheltered bay, providing a tranquil setting for your camping adventure. The sites are well-defined and surrounded by native trees and shrubs, offering a sense of privacy and seclusion. The campground is conveniently located near the main barge landing point for Moreton Island Ferries, ensuring easy access for visitors.
Please note that The Wrecks campground can only be reached by 4WD vehicles and boats. Unfortunately, camper trailers are not permitted. However, the toilet facilities are accessible by 4WD, and campers can park on the beach and take a short walk to their designated campsite.

Due to seasonal closures, not all sites will be occupied throughout the year, allowing for a peaceful and uncrowded environment. This campground is perfect for walkers, boaties, and campers without vehicles. School groups without vehicles are also encouraged to utilize this campground.
The campground offers essential facilities including treated water for drinking, hybrid toilets, cold showers, and rubbish bins. It is important to bring your own drinking water and containers, water sterilization tablets, rubbish bags, sunscreen, insect repellent, sealable containers for rubbish, a first-aid kit, and sand pegs. Additionally, please be aware that mobile phone coverage in the area is poor and unreliable, although better reception may be possible near Tangalooma Resort on the island. Reviews of The Wrecks camping area
"Beach showers, hybrid toilets, untreated water, rubbish bins and 21 well spaced and maintained camp sites. Toilets have lighting at night. Very popular so felt quite safe. 150m from where the ferry drops off. Really close to the beach & weeks so perfect spot."
"Good camping spot, right behind the Wrecks beach. Ideal for visitors walking off the MICAT ferry. Camping spots have a beach sand surface, so be sure to pack your sand pegs. Most spots do not have car access, requiring you to carry all your camping equipment a short distance. Amenities have running water (advised to boil before drinking), long drop toilets and cold outdoor showers."
"There is currently a fire ban on the island however gas cooktops are permitted. (11/12/2020) With close proximity to the Tangalooma wrecks, this is the perfect location for visitors walking off the MICAT ferry as the site does not allow car camping here. Amenities include running water (must boil before drinking), long drop toilets and outdoor showers. The site also features green ants which are far from dangerous but correct footwear may save you some discomfort, mosquitos feeding at dusk and dawn along with domestic and marsh flies. Although the camp sites are sand, I would suggest bringing an air matress. There aren't any suitable places to hang a hammock."
"Great place. Loved the snorkelling. Campsite so close to the wrecks. Just hop of barge and walk to campsite which is all in walking distance."
"Had an outstanding long weekend camping here. Usually not this effusive but our trip here was honestly one of the best short vacations of my life. Between the sunsets, the stars, hearing the ocean's waves all night, seeing starfish, and chilling on the beach drinking all day who could complain? Even the ferry ride over was enjoyable, we saw jellyfish and dolphins! And the sand was slightly phosphorescent at night which was really cool. Snorkeling in the shipwrecks was particularly amazing. Could barely move without swimming into fish! We just grabbed the gear from the hut on the beach, wasn't any issue. Also walked down to the resort the first night for the wild dolphin feeding which was definitely worthwhile. Only complaint would be that fires aren't allowed. But some other group did have their car catch on fire about 20 minutes after we arrived... was an exciting start to the trip. Photos of the excitement included. Wasn't too crowded by the way, and everyone around was super friendly. Will try to be back soon to 'Escape The Fake'! (That's the island's slogan)"
