About Wivenhoe Dam
Welcome to Wivenhoe Dam, South East Queensland's largest water storage and a prominent tourist attraction. Located in the picturesque Somerset Regional Council area, Wivenhoe Dam is a vital establishment that serves as the main water supply for Brisbane and the greater Ipswich region.
Built in 1984 on the magnificent Brisbane River, Wivenhoe Dam was meticulously designed by the Water Resources Commission. Its primary purpose is to ensure a safe and reliable water supply for the region while also providing essential flood mitigation measures. As a gated dam, it allows for controlled water releases during periods of heavy rainfall.
With a total storage capacity of 3.132 million megalitres, Wivenhoe Dam plays a crucial role in safeguarding the surrounding communities from potential flood events. In fact, during a flood, it can hold back close to two million megalitres of water on top of its drinking water storage capacity. This additional water is stored in the flood mitigation storage compartment, demonstrating the dam's commitment to protecting the region.
To stay informed about releases from Wivenhoe Dam, we offer a free dam release notification service and a public safety mobile app for your convenience. Additionally, we are excited to share that the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy has recently approved an application by Seqwater to amend the full supply levels for Somerset Dam and Wivenhoe Dam as part of the Somerset Dam Upgrade. These amended levels will remain in place until the completion of ongoing dam improvement works at Somerset Dam.
With its impressive 2.3-kilometre-long dam wall and five radial gates, Wivenhoe Dam is a remarkable engineering feat. Its catchment area spans over 7020km2, ensuring a reliable water supply for the growing population. As you explore the dam, you'll be captivated by its serene surroundings and the stunning views it offers.
At Wivenhoe Dam, we prioritize the safety and well-being of our neighbors and those downstream. We have comprehensive emergency action plans in place, working closely with the Bureau of Meteorology, relevant emergency services, and the Somerset Regional Council to respond swiftly to any potential incidents.
Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking a tranquil escape, Wivenhoe Dam is a must-visit destination. Discover the wonders of this iconic establishment, learn about its significant contributions to the region, and immerse yourself in the beauty of its surroundings.
