Our instructor, a student of the esteemed Da Xuan Daoist tradition, has been personally taught by the tradition's guardian, Master Serge Augier, since 2014. Prior to this, our instructor studied various arts of physical development, specializing in using Daoist exercises to help individuals awaken their bodies and resolve tensions and weak links.
The value of experience gained from a long-standing tradition cannot be overstated. Although not widely known in the west, these methods have been successfully utilized in the east for thousands of years. Many lineage masters have held prestigious positions as advisors to governments and important figures in society. These methods have been thoroughly tested across different time periods, generations, and people, with any ineffective practices discarded along the way.
Our approach focuses on embodying certain qualities rather than relying solely on specific exercises and techniques. Through repetitive practice, these techniques act as catalysts to ignite the desired qualities within us. Once embodied, these qualities become a natural part of our lives, infusing into our everyday activities. For this reason, we stick to seemingly simple methods such as lying, standing, shifting weight, and walking, with basic arm and leg motions. This allows for a seamless integration of practice and mundane activity.
We begin our journey by deeply relaxing the system, avoiding heavy resistance training during this stage. Relaxation is crucial as it enables us to feel our bodies from the fundamental position and direction of travel in space, expanding our awareness to the entire surface of the skin, and gradually exploring the relationship with muscles, tendons, bones, and even organs. True coordination and conscious control of the entire body become possible through deep relaxation.
As we relax deeply, we uncover and confront the weak links that have fallen into atrophy from disuse. These weak links are gradually strengthened and reunited with the rest of the system, leading to a more united and robust body that distributes and utilizes force effectively. This slower approach to strengthening the body ensures long-lasting improvement that continues into old age, rather than relying solely on the vigor of youth.
The more we relax and resolve these weak links, the more aligned and grounded we become. Grounding allows forces, whether from gravity or external sources, to pass cleanly through us without getting stuck in points of tension. This opens up numerous possibilities for interacting with these forces.
With enough repetition, movements become assimilated by the unconscious, allowing us to perform them accurately without conscious effort. This frees our attention to focus on the breath, which harmonizes with the externally assimilated movement. The integration of breath and movement brings immense vitality and transformation, enabling us to resolve deeper blockages beyond what external training alone can accomplish.
