"Before I met Rahim Ji, I could only repeat a note after hearing it but my memory of notes was poor. He started teaching me a 7 note Raga in the major scale. He insisted that I develop my memory for these seven notes such that I can pick any note; and reach any note from any other note in any octave. He also gave me a goal/dream that given any alapana, I should be able to decode its notes (or as he refers to it as a spelling of a musical phrase). With his help I have been trying to reach these main goals. I have been learning for a year and half now. My memory of notes has improved massively in comparison to when I started. With the help of an instrument (called harmonium) I can also manage to decode the notes of a musical phrase. However, I have not yet reached the mastery of decoding them in an instant without the help of the instrument. As ornamented notes is one characteristic of Indian music, he is also been teaching me to decorate the notes with meend and gamakh. He insists on the importance of rhythm ('tala') and has been teaching me to sing and improvise alongwith the rhythm. He also teaches various techniques to improve the voice texture, and how the voice should sound for low and high notes, and how to modulate the voice with different moods and emotions of songs. As a person, he is extremely nice and very patient. I can definitely dare to say that he can teach even a rock to sing, if rock had vocal cords. I look forward to keep learning from him, and one day I hope achieve mastery over notes and rhythm."

His teachings are priceless and for someone who truly wants to understand Indian classical music, Ustad Rahimji is a gift from the Almighty."
