Judith Wright Arts Centre
About the Business
Welcome to the Judith Wright Arts Centre (JWAC), a vibrant and contemporary visual and performing arts hub located in the heart of Brisbane's Fortitude Valley. Named after the celebrated Australian poet and activist, Judith Wright, this institution is dedicated to fostering creativity and showcasing innovative works.
At JWAC, we are proud to house some of Queensland's and Australia's most dynamic arts organizations. Our center serves as a creative space for exciting visual arts programming and the development and presentation of original and groundbreaking contemporary performance works. From cabaret and circus to dance, music, spoken word, and multi-disciplinary arts, JWAC offers a diverse range of experiences for art enthusiasts of all kinds.
One of our upcoming events is Ngana Us, an exhibition at the JWAC Gallery, which will run from August 11th to September 2nd, 2023. Presented by Outer Space, this exhibition promises to captivate visitors with its thought-provoking and visually stunning artworks. Best of all, admission is free, allowing everyone to immerse themselves in the world of contemporary art.
Another exciting event on our calendar is BIGSOUND, taking place from September 5th to September 8th, 2023. Presented by QMUSIC, this music festival and conference will bring together talented musicians, industry professionals, and music lovers from around the country. With a variety of performances and discussions, BIGSOUND offers a unique opportunity to discover the next big thing in Australian music. Ticket prices vary, ensuring there is an option for every budget.
Following BIGSOUND, we have Antenna, an exhibition presented by Outer Space, running from September 9th to September 30th, 2023. Similar to Ngana Us, Antenna showcases compelling contemporary artworks and provides a platform for artists to explore new ideas. As with all our exhibitions, admission is free, allowing everyone to engage with the arts without financial barriers.
At JWAC, we also believe in acknowledging and respecting the custodians and Elders, past, present, and emerging, of Country and First Nations peoples in Queensland. We recognize and honor the diverse cultural practices and knowledge systems of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Please note that the Judith Wright Arts Centre website may contain images of people who have passed away, and we advise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to be aware of this.
Whether you're an art enthusiast, a music lover, or simply looking for a unique cultural experience, the Judith Wright Arts Centre is a must-visit destination in Australia. Join us in celebrating the creativity and talent of Australian artists and immerse yourself in the vibrant arts scene of Fortitude Valley.

Reviews
"My favourite memory of Judith Wright Centre was when I was given the opportunity to meet and photograph Archie Roach. I picked him, his manager, and his niece up from the hotel where they were staying and offered them a ride up to the Judith Wright Centre, where he was playing, in my 1991 Ford EA Falcon station waggon. I parked out the front of the venue, and my car stalled, which, in my opinion, would not have made a good first impression. I went to park my car and then met them again. I had about 4 minutes to photograph him and then we watched them play a few songs. He was very down to earth, and I am still grateful that he allowed me to photograph him."
"A wonderful venue for performing arts in an intimate setting. The art gallery is also, always worth a look"
"A nice gallery to stroll through once in a while (and come back when you have more time). Thought provoking art helps broadening one's insight. The store always has something that'll catch your attention."
"Excellent venue. Convenient parking across the road. Kylie Gilbert-Moore speaking with Peter Greste for the Brisbane Writer's Festival 2022. Well organised and run event."
"Good arts centre, the main performing hall is a good size and because the chairs are movable it helps with social distancing if need be. The security are very professional and helpful. My one criticism is how small the bathrooms are. The women's bathroom had a line of 20 people during the intermission despite the men's being almost empty. Overall a great place though"
