At Nestoras College, we are proud to have the students present the "Flags of Freedom" project, honoring the heroes of the 1821 Greek War of Independence. This initiative involved selecting and creating flags from the collection displayed at the old parliament, now a museum, in Athens. It is a testament to the deep connection our students have with their Greek heritage and their commitment to celebrating freedom and the resilience of the Greek people.

For over 49 years, Nestoras College has been providing a nurturing environment for students to embrace their Greek language, identity, and conscience. Our journey began in 1975 when two experienced teachers from Greece founded the school with the goal of maintaining and preserving Greek language and culture in Australia. Since then, we have grown significantly and now offer Greek language tuition at three campuses in Melbourne: Thornbury High School, Doncaster Secondary College, and Thomastown Secondary College. From Kinder to VCE Year 12, we cater to students of all ages.

Our comprehensive school program empowers students to cultivate their Greek language skills and deepen their knowledge of Greek heritage and culture. Through Greek dance, music, and theater, students engage with the richness of Greek traditions. We embrace centuries of Hellenic culture to enrich our students' cultural identity and Greek conscience.

From ancient Greek philosophers like Aristotle and Socrates to historical figures like Alexander the Great and the heroes of the Battle of Thermopylae, our students are immersed in the ancient world of Greek civilization. They learn about the artistic, political, philosophical, and scientific achievements that have had an unparalleled influence on Western civilization.

The history of Modern Greece is also integral to our curriculum. Students explore events such as the liberation of Greece from the Ottoman Empire, the War of Independence, and the courage of the Greek people during World War II. We also delve into Greek mythology, connecting mythical characters and heroes to modern-day Hollywood films, graphic novels, and television shows.

Our instrument tuition program offers students the opportunity to learn Acoustic Guitar, Bouzouki, or Baglama. With over 100 students currently enrolled, this program allows students to develop their musical skills while connecting with Greek culture.

Greek dancing is another cherished part of our Greek heritage that all our students enjoy on a weekly basis. We have invested in over 90 traditional costumes from various regions in Greece, allowing students to wear representative costumes as they progress and dance to live traditional music at our concerts. This direct experience with Greek culture is truly enriching.

Theatrical productions also play a significant role in our educational programs. Students have the opportunity to express their creativity, project a positive and self-confident image, and promote active learning and understanding through a kinaesthetic approach. All theater productions are showcased at our school concerts held in June and December each year.

Nestoras College is proud to have been founded by two experienced teachers from Greece in 1975. Today, we have grown to support over 700 students across our three campuses. Our dedicated teachers are fully certified to teach Greek language and culture, ensuring the highest quality education for our students.
