The National Drama School
About the Business
Welcome to The National Drama School, located in the vibrant suburb of St Kilda, Melbourne. Established in 1936 by the esteemed arts pioneer Gertrude Johnson OBE, The National Drama School (formerly National Theatre Drama School) is Australia's longest-established vocational training organization for acting. We are proud to be a leading cultivator of stage and screen talent.
Under the inspired leadership of Director of Drama, Dr Jo Loth, our teaching faculty, comprised of industry experts, impart their professional skills and techniques to budding young actors in the heritage-listed National Theatre complex. This iconic venue serves as the perfect backdrop for our students to hone their craft and unleash their creativity.
Our flagship Diploma of Acting program prepares young acting talents for a fulfilling career on stage and screen. With a focus on industry connections, intimate class sizes, and a passion for the craft of acting, The National Drama School Melbourne celebrates and champions diversity while nurturing excellence and authenticity.
At The National Drama School, we believe that creative play, confidence, and ensemble work are central to all our classes. We offer a Young Actors Program for students in school years three and above, available in two streams: The Stage Performance Ensemble and Screen Acting: Skills for Life. These programs provide a solid foundation for young performers to develop their skills and build a lifelong love for the arts.
For adults looking to tap into and expand their creative talents, our acting classes offer the perfect opportunity. Our diverse array of short courses explores movement, voice, text, and screen acting, catering to aspiring actors and industry professionals alike. Engage, connect, and upskill under the guidance of our expert industry teachers β we can't wait to see you in our studios!
We also offer a safe and supportive environment for primary and secondary school students to learn performance skills, focusing on voice, physicality, and focus to convey ideas. Our School Holiday program culminates in an ensemble performance on the main stage of The National Theatre, allowing students to showcase their newfound skills to family and friends.
For those seeking a more intensive training experience, our nationally accredited Advanced Diploma of Acting (10884NAT) is a full-time professional course that prepares students for careers in theatre, film, television, and new media. This comprehensive program equips students with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the performing arts industry.
As a not-for-profit organization, The National Drama School relies on the generosity of people like you to continue our important work. Your support helps us nurture the next generation of talented actors and performers.
We are proud to be part of The National Ballet School, Melbourne, and the historic National Theatre. Together, we create a vibrant hub for the performing arts in Melbourne.
In the spirit of reconciliation, The National Melbourne proudly acknowledges the Boonwurrung people of the Kulin nation as the Traditional Custodians of the unceded lands on which we work, train, and perform. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present, as well as to all First Nations peoples.

"Enjoying the vocal class. Dr Jo is a wonderful teacher and makes all the students feel comfortable developing their voices."
"Interesting place the starter drama course is nice but waste of time too much social games instead of drama classes."
