Claypots Evening Star
About the Business
Welcome to Claypots Evening Star, located in South Melbourne Market, Australia. As an establishment, food, and point of interest, we are not your average restaurant. We believe that sex and food are primal drives that share a common evolutionary vestige, making them intertwined in fascinating ways. Just like taboos, social norms, and rituals apply to both sex and food, we explore the complex relationship between these two human experiences.
At Claypots Evening Star, we aim to challenge the social commodification of food and sex that is rampant in consumer societies. We strive to avoid the fetishization of food and remind ourselves that it is meant to nourish and sustain us. We believe that good food is meant to be shared, enjoyed with the company of others.
Our restaurant has become a favorite among locals and visitors alike. With the freshest seafood, delicious flavors, and an amazing menu, we ensure that every dining experience is memorable. Our owner, Hasan, goes above and beyond to provide excellent service and create a welcoming atmosphere. To enhance your experience, we also offer live music performances.
Our dishes are known for their delicious taste and consistency. Whether you try our Spaghettini puttenesca, Stuffed eggplant, Mt Martha mussels, beans, or fish, you can expect fantastic flavors at a fair price. We have been a regular spot for many for years, and we highly recommend you make us one of your go-to places in Melbourne.
We are proud to be associated with one of Melbourne's major and oldest markets. In line with the tradition of world markets, we see ourselves as a watering hole where people can rest, exchange news, and enjoy the joviality and playfulness of the market ambiance. We envision our restaurant as a cargo ship moored at South Melbourne, carrying wines and supplies from all around the world. Our wine selection focuses on coastal areas, rivers, and estuaries, with options from Portugal to Frankland River, Rias Baixas to McLaren Vale, Loire to Marlborough. And of course, we also offer Champagne for those special occasions.
To ensure a table for your visit, we recommend booking for a large group of more than 10 people. However, if you're a smaller party, feel free to come 15 minutes early, and we will seat you as soon as a table becomes available. We look forward to welcoming you to Claypots Evening Star, where food, community, and a unique dining experience await you.

"Food was great. Well priced. Great flavours. However, not consistent. First time was a delight and a lovely surprise - order grilled prawn, oysters were nice and the spaghetti marinara was delicious! However went another time and the marinara was bland and seafood still had that "fishy/sea" taste. The calamari was perfect."
"Not a conventional restaurant, but a very unique one. An extensive menu of high quality seafood cooked very well is available. All dishes are seasoned perfectly and, amazingly are distinct enough from one another to warrant such a large menu. While the surroundings are fairly cluttered, and while perhaps you see too much of what the chef/staff are doing, you cannot argue that the restaurant is not fully transparent with its preparations and seafood stock. The dining area is noisy and if there is entertainment in the restaurant, you will struggle to converse. This may not be the best restaurant for a first date, but a great one for a second! Prices are not cheap, but they are reasonable for the high quality you should be receiving."
"Amazing dinner spot for seafood! Stingray/Skate dish is different and super yummy Clam pasta simple and amazing Dog friendly outdoor seating with gas heaters."
"Loved the ambience and the delicious food! We ordered Chilli Sourdough, Mussels with Sambal Ginger, and Grilled Calamari. The food not only aesthetically nice, but tasted really delicious too."
"A South Melbourne institution. Bar stool seating inside or small 2pax tables outside along the brick wall. Unfortunately I’ve had hit and miss experiences with Claypots. Pro: Oysters and king prawns have always been fresh. Scallops aren’t overcooked and comes with flavoursome dressing. Cons: Upon a recent visit during lunch service, food quality has changed. Mussels were served on a plate (not a bowl), the thin broth/sauce was super salty, and the bread was stale and lacked any butter. The spaghettini with clams was bland. Asked for chilli oil, paid $2 for a thick chilli paste. Asked for parmesan, didn’t have any. Not in a rush to go back."
