Sydney Tramway Museum
About the Business
Welcome to the Sydney Tramway Museum, located at Loftus, Pitt Street, 2 in Australia. As an establishment, museum, point of interest, and tourist attraction, we offer a unique experience that takes you back in time. For over 50 years, we have been dedicated to preserving and operating Sydney's vintage trams, which played a significant role in everyday life for over 80 years until 1961.
At our museum, you can explore a wide selection of Sydney's vintage trams, as well as an impressive collection from other cities such as Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Ballarat. We also showcase trams from around the world, including San Francisco, Nagasaki, Munich, Milan, and Berlin. With such a diverse collection, you'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich history of trams.
Conveniently located next to Loftus railway station, you can easily access our museum. Simply get your ticket from the conductor and hop on board to enjoy a 4km journey towards Sutherland and the Royal National Park. Trams operate hourly, starting at 10.15am (last trip departs National Park at 2:30pm on Wednesdays and 4:30pm on Sundays).
What sets us apart is that our museum is entirely run by volunteers. Every dollar from your ticket sale goes towards keeping the museum operational. We take pride in offering a hands-on experience, ensuring that both young and old can enjoy our trams.
If you have a passion for trams and would like to contribute, we are always in need of more volunteers. Whether you're interested in being a traffic conductor, driver, workshop assistant, or helping with infrastructure, cleaning, or administration, we have opportunities for you. Simply pick up a membership form from one of our helpful volunteers and become a member. Join us in preserving the history of trams for future generations.
Accessibility is important to us, and while our site is generally mobility-impaired friendly, access to the trams themselves may be restricted due to their design. However, we have provided a platform to facilitate access, and our museum staff will assist you wherever possible.
Your entry ticket grants you unlimited tram rides and museum entry, allowing you to fully enjoy all that we have to offer. Families or groups of friends can visit without making a booking, but social and school groups are encouraged to book in advance.
We are excited to welcome you to the Sydney Tramway Museum and look forward to providing you with an unforgettable experience. Copyright 2016 South Pacific Electric Railway Co-operative Society Ltd.

"A lovely volunteer run museum with lots for train and rail enthusiasts to discover. Really liked the balance between trams you could jump in and 'play' in and the more unique ones that were for the die hard enthusiasts! The volunteers were so fabulous as well, very patient and knowledgeable."
"A little gem of a museum. Amazing collection of beautifully restored old tram cars and memorabilia from a bygone era of Sydney’s public transport. Great place for a family day out with unlimited rides on some old trams included with the entrance fee."
"A fun and educational museum full of tram history. Great for kids and run by enthusiastic volunteers. The tram rides were a blast. Open Wednesday and Sunday."
"Tram rides are amazing, they have an incredible indoor museum display too. I highly recommend taking a tram trip to Sutherland then up to the Royal National Park, where you can alight and explore the trails."
"Such a great hidden gem! We visited during their annual Vintage Tramway Festival and it was such a delight for both the adults and children! Love that you’re able to walk into various trams to get an up close and personal view of them all, as well as experience some tram rides. I would definitely recommend their Vintage Tramway Festival if you’re able to attend! It felt like we had stepped into a time portal taking us to the early 1900s with the beautiful trams, buses and classic cars on show and in wonderful condition. Such great work by all the volunteers - thank you so much for what you do and for preserving all this great history of bygone Sydney! We thoroughly enjoyed our visit!"
