About the Business
Welcome to Chi Sau Club Kung Fu, located in the vibrant neighborhood of Surry Hills in Sydney, Australia. Our establishment is a point of interest for those seeking to improve their health and well-being through the practice of Wing Chun Kung Fu.
Wing Chun is a style of Kung Fu that is known for its simplicity and practicality. Our club focuses on teaching the traditional curriculum of Wing Chun, as well as the unique internal training methods of Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin. With an emphasis on correct posture, alignment, relaxation, and focus, our instructors guide students of all ages and sizes to develop tremendous power, stability, and mental clarity.
Our founder, Sifu Mark Spence, has dedicated his life to the study and teaching of Wing Chun Kung Fu. With over 30 years of experience, Sifu Mark's expertise is reflected in his ability to explain even the most complex aspects of the Wing Chun system in an easily understandable manner. His background as a former bouncer also provides valuable insights into the practical application of self-defense techniques.
At Chi Sau Club, our aim is to pass on the teachings of Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin in a pure and unadulterated fashion. We focus on developing a deeper level of mind-body connection, rather than simply drilling complicated techniques. Students are taught the "Four Pillars" of CST Wing Chun, which include stance, upright spine, relaxation, and aim. With these foundational principles, even individuals without brute strength can generate tremendous force.
Our training environment is relaxed and casual, and we welcome students to train at their own pace. We do not enforce uniforms, rankings, or gradings, following the tradition of Hong Kong-style training. This creates a friendlier and more productive atmosphere for learning. Additionally, we provide tea and coffee to further enhance the sense of community within our club.
Whether you are seeking to improve your physical fitness, enhance your mental well-being, or develop practical self-defense skills, Chi Sau Club Kung Fu offers a lifetime of enjoyment and personal development. Join us today to experience the addictive power of Wing Chun and embark on a journey of self-discovery.

"While on a trip to Sydney for a competition, I was kindly invited for some tea and training by Louis Shapiro. I was touched by the hospitality and the level and quality of his training method. I will recommend the school to anyone wanting to train Wing Chun in Sydney. Thanks again Louis!"
"I’m originally a practitioner from Adelaide - out of interest to see how how other schools in Australia convey and formulate their ideas in regards to sigung’s (Grandmaster CST) teachings, in Sydney, I found the chi sau club to easily pay the greatest homage to such teachings. Instructor Lewis was very informative and realistic in his application - I had a blast messing around with him while I was there. The essence of how the classes are run - freedom to rock up or leave whenever, no rankings/grading and concise yet effective curriculum creates an environment which may be a turn off for some, but in my opinion, ultimately paves a solid path for someone who’s serious about learning this martial art."
"I highly recommend this school, it's definitely a hidden gem that's worth discovering. I've trained there for a year and a half before moving to Europe and I can say that the students in all the videos from Mark's school are not faking and jumping away during the demonstrations- anyone can use the trial lesson to confirm it ;) Mark is a great martial artist and an amazing teacher. He's very patient and flexible in his ways of teaching which lets him adjust to the needs of the individual students. During teaching he backs everything he describes with actual demonstrations showing his great (almost inhuman) skills. He's very dedicated to passing on the Chu Shong Tin's Wing Chun. School itself has a very easy-going vibe. Mark's humble and positive attitude creates a welcoming and friendly atmosphere free of the strictly hierarchical structures that are so common in the martial arts schools. Senior students are eager to help others so that everyone can get the most of the trainings. For me personally the most endearing thing was that people were not afraid to admit when they didn't know an answer to a question and instead they went looking for the answers themselves, in my opinion this is usually a sign of confidence and modesty and is possible only when the example comes directly from the teacher."
"I started training at Chi Sau Club in 2013. I was truly surprised to find a school that practiced the internal side of Kung, with such knowledgeable, and skilled teachers. Mark Spence is an excellent martial artist, and a great teacher. I highly recommend Chi Sau Club, it changed my life completely: I finally learned a good method for relaxation, and calmness."
"I trained at Chi Sau club for 3 years before moving interstate. Right from the beginning I was impressed with Mark’s commitment to practising and promoting Chu Shong Tin’s style of Wing Chun. Sifu Mark is an experienced and highly skilled practitioner of Wing Chun who is, at the same time, genuinely humble and enthusiastic in his approach to every student and anyone who enters the training hall. As a teacher, he is clear in his verbal explanations and always models the skill he is teaching. Training at Chi Sau club takes place on an individual level: Mark makes a point of working with each student every time that person trains at the club. His positive and encouraging manner sets the tone and atmosphere of the club. Senior students will often interrupt their own training and move around the hall quietly offering advice and encouragement. No one seems interested in showing off their skills, rather students are interested in learning and helping each other improve their skills."
