Giles Baths
About the Business
Welcome to Giles Baths, a unique establishment located at the foot of the northern headland of Coogee Beach in Australia. This natural rock pool, affectionately known as the "Bogey hole," has a rich history that dates back to the nineteenth century when it was primarily used by male bathers. Today, it continues to be a popular swimming hole, particularly among young people, and offers a fun and adventurous experience for visitors exploring Coogee Beach.
To access Giles Baths, you can either take the Coastal Walkway in Dunningham Reserve, near the Bali Memorial, or venture along the rocky foreshore north of Coogee Beach. As you approach, you'll notice the entry portico from the original "Giles Gym and Baths," which still remains as a reminder of the institution's past.
While the baths are a great attraction, it's important to note that they can be rough during strong surf conditions. Lifeguards are frequently present to ensure the safety of visitors and provide first aid for any bumps, cuts, or bruises that may occur.
Giles Gym and Baths was once a prominent feature of Coogee Beach, managed by Mr. Oscar Giles himself. Built in 1928, this health center and hot baths quickly became a progressive fitness venue of its time. Offering a variety of services, including electricity treatments, hydrotherapy, and hot sea baths as medical treatments, Giles Baths catered to a diverse range of clientele. One of the more peculiar treatments available was the use of sweat boxes, small heated enclosures that aided in weight loss.
Separate facilities were provided for both genders, but the ocean pool and nude bathing were exclusively for men and remained so for many years. This unique environment attracted a mix of individuals, including sportsmen, racing identities, criminals, the constabulary, and even well-known politicians. The diverse clientele bonded and mingled, creating a sense of camaraderie that was rare at the time.
In 1975, Messer's O'Neill, Motta, and Stevens took over the lease of Giles Baths and operated the premises until 1998. During their tenure, they added squash courts to the building while retaining the name Giles Baths. Unfortunately, after 1998, the building fell into disrepair and was ultimately demolished in 2000. Today, only the original portico entry and sections of the wall remain as a testament to its past.
At Giles Baths, we prioritize your safety in the water. To help you stay informed, we offer a directory of services and groups that can assist you during your visit. Additionally, we are proud to acknowledge and pay respects to the Bidjigal and Gadigal Clans, who traditionally occupied this area of the Sydney Coast, and honor the Elders both past and present.
Come and experience the rich history and natural beauty of Giles Baths. Whether you're diving into the refreshing waters, exploring the surrounding coastal areas, or simply soaking up the sun, our establishment offers a truly unique and memorable experience for all.

Reviews
"A fun spot for sunbathing or a swim, be cautious of uneven rocks and crabs! Haha"
"This is worth a stop when doing the walk from Coogee to Bondi. The water down by the rocks is a brilliant blue and the scene looking back at the beach is fantastic. You can step right into the water and swim too, if bone chilling water is your thing."
"Located at the foot of the northern headland of Coogee Beach. It's a small yet beautiful, sometimes can be rough natural rock pool, known as the "Bogey hole" . It’s popular and always busy."
"Still remember my first visit here in the late 70's as a young teenager, when Giles Gym was operating. The old school gymnasium, rusty weights, scrappy leather benches & the old guys everywhere. After the workout we go out back & climb down the sandstone steps to the ocean pool below. something I always looked forward to & kept me coming back for many a year."
