About Clem Morath Rock Pool
Welcome to the Clem Morath Rock Pool, located in Middle Harbour, New South Wales, Australia. This establishment holds a special place in the hearts of the local community, as it was named after Clem Morath, a beloved figure who taught swimming to thousands of children in the area for several decades.
Originally, the pool was a small semi-enclosed wading pool nestled between rocky outcrops. Today, you can still catch a glimpse of the original rocky outcrop behind the pool, which is now home to a diverse array of fascinating marine life. Take a leisurely stroll along the sandstone wall surrounding the pool, and you'll be treated to a captivating underwater world.
Constructed in the 1920s, the sandstone wall was designed to create a safe and enjoyable swimming enclosure for families in Mosman. Over the years, countless children, including my own three boys, have learned to swim in this very pool. In the past, during high tide, children would even dive off the wall, while adults would delight in the deep waters.
In 1989, the Mosman Council officially named the pool Clem Morath Pool as a tribute to Clem's dedication to teaching local children. Although the commemorative plaque is no longer present, the spirit of Clem's legacy lives on.
Throughout the late 20th century, severe storms, known as East Coast Lows, caused significant damage to the pool. Sandstone blocks were dislodged, and sand began to accumulate. The Council made several attempts to rectify the situation, but it wasn't until 2012 that a breakthrough occurred. Roy Bendall, recently elected Deputy Mayor, spearheaded the construction of a breakwater outside the existing wall. Since then, the wall has successfully stood against the forces of nature.
Today, the Clem Morath Rock Pool continues to provide a safe and inviting environment for young children to develop their love for the water. Privately owned, the neighboring Oriana at Balmoral Beach is a renowned property that adds to the charm of this iconic location on Sydney Harbour.
Come and experience the beauty and history of the Clem Morath Rock Pool. Whether you're looking to swim, relax, or explore the fascinating marine life, this establishment offers a unique and memorable experience for visitors of all ages.
