"The last time I was at the Rex it was a bar. Unluckily for the Rex I had been in Franca the night before, which really hit the mark, so this might be hard act to follow. A warm welcome, so far so good. Does not really have a brasserie feel, more a Manhattan steak house. Had the Caviar Bump and Vodka to start, A nice idea. Wanted to go for the Sunday special of Champagne Chicken, however was sold out. Opted for the Linguine, which would have been excellent had it been served at a temperature that would considered at least warm. Steak frites, beautiful Cafe De Paris sauce, hot fries, but my Steak was a little over cooked, perhaps the better choice might have been the minute steak. All restaurants are doing it, disappointing enough so is Rex. $72 of the bill was made up of credit card charge, “sparkling mineral water” and the Sunday supplement, and this was just two of us. Overall, it was like my Latin school report, shows promise, good in certain areas, lacking in some. Beta plus In summary slightly disappointing, especially comparing with Franca."
"Had a great experience in here. The food was delicious, probably the best French cuisine that I tried so far in Sydney. The portion surprisingly very good and feed 4 of us easily while sharing all the dishes. Ambience and environment could be a little bit brighter, but overall was great place."
"The ambience was great, table well spaced out. The waitress/waiters were very professional and attentive, paid attention to small details. Whenever our water was near finished they would top it up promptly. Seems we may have visited the restaurant on a bad day (not sure if they changed chef as the dishes look very different from reviews and social media). The baked cheese Soufflé was very dry (refer to pics) and a bit bland. We ordered the steak (medium rare) and frites, but it came out medium so we told our waitress who then took it in to the chef, and at the end the waitress bought the same dish out saying that the chef have made it medium rare but because it continued to cook while letting it rest hence became medium and insisted that's how they cooked it there. So we continued eating it, have to say it was very tough and dry. At the end of the night , we asked one of the waiter for the bill (as our waitress was busy at that time) , and he came and asked if our food was okay and if the experience was good and we said "it's okay" and he could tell straight away something was wrong and asked us what went wrong and tried to get the details and we explained and he asked if we got a replacement and we said no, they just bought the same one out. He straight away went to the kitchen to talk to the chef and then rushed to talk to the manager (or owner?). At that time our waitress came back and was preparing our bill and the manager rushed over and talked to her. Later she explained she removed the steak off our bill, we insisted they didn't have to and was not our intention when we provided feedback but she said she wants the customer to be happy. Obviously we tipped them more than usual because the way these waiters dealt with the situation was very professional. They could of easily ignored or said noted when they took our feedback but they didn't but took fast action. It was hard for me to review as the food in fact was below standard (and could possibly be just a bad night) but the waiter (especially the guy that helped us at the end of the meal) was surely amazing. The owner is surely lucky to have you guys. Originally wanting to give 1 star but because of you guys I decided to give more. Will revise rating if we go back again, in case it was just a bad day for the chef."
