As you step into Twenty-One Espresso, you'll be transported to a bygone era, where quality and warmth are paramount. The legacy of our founder, Jansci (John) Schiffer, lives on through his son George and grandson Michael, who continue to infuse the establishment with the same energy and passion that made it a focal point for Sydney's most notable personalities and families.
When Jansci arrived in Sydney from Hungary in 1957, he saw a gap in the market for outdoor dining options in the city's favorable climate. Seizing the opportunity, he imported one of the first Italian espresso machines and set up Twenty-One Espresso in the then-sleepy suburb of Double Bay. The café quickly became a resounding success, attracting a loyal following and growing into a cherished meeting place for locals.
At Twenty-One Espresso, we pride ourselves on offering a wide selection of wines and alcoholic beverages, ensuring that your dining experience is complete. Whether you're looking for a cozy spot to enjoy a cup of coffee and a slice of cake, or a place to gather with friends and family for a memorable meal, our fully licensed establishment has you covered.

"My Hungarian grandfathers favourite place. He would always take us there as kids and I still go back to this day. It hasn’t changed one bit. Such special memories here, 10/10 every time we go. Best goulash in Australia without a doubt."
"Really adorable Eastern European Cafe style restaurant. I'm not an expert in this style of cuisine, but it seemed quite authentic. We came for the Matzo Ball Soup and the Chicken Noodle Soup. The Matzo Ball Soup was quite cold, and the dumpling was quite dense. The Chicken Noodle Soup on the other hand was hearty and delicious. We also curiosily ordered the spaghetti. It was nice! More meaty than saucy, and very moreish. Charming place, we'd love to come back and try other dishes too."
"Really enjoyed the rustic European feel of this cafe. Portions were generous (big breakfast) and the chicken schnitzel sandwich is a must try. Eggs Benedict were lovely as well. Don't forget the coffee. Service was friendly and food came out promptly. Decor is a bit dated but the food quality and service more than makes up for it. Will definitely come back!"
