About the Business
Welcome to The Barra, a family-run establishment located at Mortdale, Morts Road, 16 in Australia. Since 1961, we have been serving up delicious seafood and mouthwatering burgers, starting in the small coastal town of Kiama on the South Coast of NSW.
In the 70s, two of the founding brothers, Con and Chris, along with their families, made the bold decision to move to Sydney and open a fresh and cooked seafood shop. Their commitment to freshness and quality became the cornerstone of their success, and they instilled these values in their children as they grew up working in the shop.
As a child, I have fond memories of helping out my parents before and after school, always guided by my father's words: "If YOU won't eat it, then don't sell it." The passion for seafood was deeply ingrained in our family, and we would often gather for big family meals, watching our mothers and aunties cook seafood with the brothers always checking up on the quality. It was a true labor of love.
In late August 2015, my sister Stavrulla and I brought our years of experience in seafood to Mortdale. Shortly after, my son Dean joined the family business, bringing a fresh perspective and enthusiasm. Two years later, we expanded our reach by opening another shop in the Sutherland shire, Gymea. Our goal is to continue growing and sharing our passion for seafood with even more people in the future.
At The Barra, we pride ourselves on serving freshly cooked seafood daily. With decades of experience and a dedicated team, we bring the ocean to your plate. Our commitment to quality and freshness is unmatched, ensuring that every meal we serve is a true delight for your taste buds.
Whether you're craving a classic fish and chips, a mouthwatering seafood platter, or a juicy burger, we have something for everyone. Our menu is carefully crafted to satisfy all seafood lovers, and we are always happy to accommodate dietary preferences and restrictions.
Join us at The Barra and experience the taste of tradition and passion for seafood that has been passed down through generations. We can't wait to serve you the best meals, made with love and expertise, every single day.

"Ordered some grilled fish and calamari. Was told would be 45 min wait. Came 1 hr later to give them time. Went to pay only to be told that the order wasn't even ready to be grilled yet, and would be another 40 min wait. 50 min round trip there and back. No apology offered. Very average experience."
"I ordered calamari and after ordering I requested the it be cooked a little longer in order to crisp the coating as i had endured a soggy serve dripping with oil previously. The calamari was served dripping in oil. The cook took control of my rejection of the serve and proceeded with another. This too was dripping with oil. The cook refunded my original payment without being asked and without question which was appreciated, however I ordered with the intention of eating not receiving my money back"
"Been here dozens of times and overall it is very good. The waiting time is fairly quick, the grilled fish is nice and they have a variety of salads to choose from, all equally as tasty. Definitely the best fish and chips shop in the St.George area."
"A great local gem and very popular with the locals. The portions are big, fish and seafood is always fresh, and food is prepared very efficiently. It's a place that my wife and I visit every weekend."
"Just your local fish and chips shop that always has lines that stretch along the street. I have wondered about the popularity of the place and now that I've tried the food there, they have all the right to get people knocking on their front door. I was craving some nostalgic potato scallops and selling for only 90 cents, their potato scallops were pulling at my heartstrings. It is freshly fried with a crispy, golden exterior containing soft, indulgent potato. An amazing slice of childhood! The same marvellous taste can be said for their fish and chips. I ordered a lunch deal of perch fillets, chips and a choice of salad. They have a great range of salads that distinguishes it from many other fish and chip shops. My pear rocket salad was well-balanced with the sweetness of the pear pairing with the bitter rocket. The chips were alright but the crumbed perch was something to talk about. The crumb is a gift from heaven, a tasty crunch that gives the tender perch a new dimension. It had me eating the leftover crumbs with no regrets. One criticism would be the waiting times for the food seeing that you get quick service at the cashier. Instead of walking past, take the time to see the brilliance of an Australian classic. You might find yourself in those eager lines in the near future."
