KOMEYUI Melbourne
About the Business
Welcome to KOMEYUI Melbourne, a unique establishment located at 181 Ferrars Street in Southbank, Australia. As a renowned restaurant and point of interest, we offer a dining experience that goes beyond just food. At KOMEYUI, we believe that life without art is no life at all, and we strive to bring the beauty of Japanese cuisine to every dish we create.
Our philosophy is rooted in the art of Japanese cuisine, where every ingredient is invited to reach its full potential. Drawing inspiration from this creative lens, our dishes are consciously re-invented to ignite the senses and create a symphony of flavors. Each dish is driven by imagination and designed to provide a sensory experience like no other.
The foundation of Japanese cuisine lies in balance, and we take this principle to heart. Every component of a dish must be perfectly balanced and elevated to work harmoniously with others. For example, our nigiri showcases the importance of each element – the rice and fish – in creating one harmonious flavor. We use a traditional cast iron rice cooker called HAGAMA, which evenly cooks the rice and enhances its fragrance and flavor due to its unique shape and heat-retaining metal.
At KOMEYUI, we understand that art is often most potent in a single moment. Applying this concept to our sushi and sashimi, we present them at the optimal time for peak flavor development. Each fish is carefully sliced at the perfect moment, resulting in every dish served being a fleeting artwork of its own.
KOMEYUI is the realization of Chef and owner Motomu Kumano's humble ambition. Growing up in a small fishing town in Hokkaido, Chef Kuma developed a deep appreciation for the beauty and simplicity of fresh Japanese ingredients. He has brought his art, discipline, passion, and perfection for authentic, handmade Japanese cuisine to Australia.
We invite you to join us at KOMEYUI Melbourne and experience the artistry and flavors of Japanese cuisine like never before. Indulge in our meticulously crafted dishes and let us take you on a culinary journey that celebrates the beauty of food and the senses.

"Kaiseki menu $220 with a well priced sake-matching drinks menu. Good ambience. Luxe but casual and cosy at the same time. Good service, great food and good timing of dishes. We added a 7 piece nigiri at the end too."
"Came here to try their ala carte a couple of weeks ago. Had a great food and a great service. The staff was polite, welcoming and provided great service. Ordered nori crunch, jamon on toast, eel hitsumabushi, wagyu foie gras rice, matcha creme brulee and yuzu sorbet Overall, recommend this restaurant! Would love to come back for omakase next time :)"
"Delicious and beautifully served authentic Japanese food with wonderful and friendly service. If you are looking for 5 star food and service, this is the place to go! We took our two little ones (3 & 6 year olds) and while they didn’t fully appreciate the experience, they were treated wonderfully by the staff and we still had a great time. We look forward to coming back again soon. Thank you for your hospitality."
"I surprised my partner with a birthday dinner at this Japanese restaurant and it was an amazing experience from start to finish. The staff was incredibly polite and provided top-notch service. The food was simply outstanding - you could really taste the freshness of the ingredients and the passion that the chef put into every dish. Watching the chef prepare the sushi was mesmerizing, and our chef (I believe his name was Taang) was very friendly and personable. We even shared a good laugh over one of the fish that sounded Italian. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an authentic Japanese dining experience. To top it all off, the restaurant surprised my partner with a little dessert with a candle."
