About Curraghchase Forest Park Coillte
Welcome to Curraghchase Forest Park Coillte, located in County Limerick, Toreen. This establishment is not just a park, but a point of interest and a must-visit tourist attraction. Spanning over 300 hectares, Curragh Chase offers a breathtaking landscape of rolling parkland, scenic trails, mixed woodland, serene lakes, and a captivating arboretum.
Once the grand home of the de Vere family, particularly Sir Aubrey de Vere, a renowned poet and author, the former grand house's façade still stands proudly on the hill, overlooking the main car park and the man-made lake. As you explore the park, you'll come across various remnants of the de Vere estate, including an impressive arboretum, a pet cemetery, and a memorial cross.
For nature enthusiasts, Curragh Chase offers several Special Areas of Conservation (SACs), primarily due to the presence of the Lesser Horseshoe Bat and the rare hawfinch bird. The park is currently undergoing native woodland restoration, with Coillte actively involved in preserving important pockets of the park, such as the native Yew woodland. Ducks and waterfowl gracefully inhabit the lake, adding to the park's natural beauty.
Regardless of age, there is something for everyone at Curragh Chase. Take advantage of the newly introduced cashless payment system at the car park, which now accepts credit and debit cards, as well as any AP-based payment system. Annual passes are still valid, and new passes can be purchased on the Coillte website.
Curragh Chase is open from 07:00 to 21:00 (1st April to 31st October) and from 08:00 to 18:00 (1st November to 31st March). Conveniently located 22km west of Limerick city on the N69 coast road, near the villages of Kilcornan and Askeaton, getting to the park is a breeze.
With six walking trails catering to all fitness levels, you can embark on a leisurely stroll or an invigorating hike. The Lake Trail offers a gentle 1.1km walk around the lake, providing stunning views of the house. The Curragh Trail (2.4km) and the Glenisca Trail (3.6km) take you deeper into the forest, passing by an old cave, limestone outcrops, and the enchanting Yew woodland. Cyclists can also enjoy these multi-use trails.
Children will delight in the two extensive playgrounds within the park, while nature enthusiasts can explore the magnificent arboretum, which showcases a remarkable collection of trees and shrubs from around the world. Keep an eye out for the pet cemetery tucked away in this area. Numerous picnic tables and BBQ stands are available at the main car parking area, perfect for a relaxed outdoor meal.
For those seeking adventure, Curragh Chase offers orienteering, with a permanent course spread throughout the park. This activity allows you to explore the park while honing your navigation skills. Additionally, the park features a Wheel-O course, ideal for a fun and engaging family experience.
If you're looking to extend your stay, Curragh Chase Caravan & Campsite is situated within the park, offering a truly special camping experience surrounded by nature.
Nature lovers will be spoilt for choice at Curragh Chase, with its diverse habitats and abundant flora and fauna. The Yew woodland, the lake and its feathered residents, the bats dwelling in the grand house, and the stunning specimen trees in the arboretum are just a few of the park's natural wonders waiting to be discovered.
