"My wife and I were travelling from Donegal to Cork on a business trip. We decided to stop in Portlaoise for dinner but weren't sure where to go. Hume's Bar caught our eye with it's striking sandwich board and colourful signage. We had a trailer and required a large parking space. There was plenty of parking just across the road. We entered into a small bar area and were immediately met with friendly smiling staff. We had our doubts at first....but don't judge too quickly! The smell from the kitchen was amazing. The young man who owns the bar greeted us warmly and was chatty and funny. This is the old style Irish hospitality at its best. We sat by the lovely hot pot-belly stove and we loved the 'oldy-world' feel with a touch of modern world. We ordered chicken wings to start and they were delicious! Finger bowl was provided. We had steaks and the servings were extremely generous and cooked to absolute perfection. The owner couldn't have been more helpful. He obviously takes good care of his staff and this is lovely to see. He is a young man who has recently taken over running Hume's and he is making a tremendous success of it by all accounts. We will definitely make Portlaoise our half way stop next time we are travelling south. 10 out of 10!"
