"Had lunch here after our visit to Mary Rose. It was 1 pm and the place was quite packed. We chose to order and pay at the bar and the lady in charge was friendly and having a banter with her regulars. We opted for the five plate sampler and they were okay. The chicken kariagge was definitely not done Japanese style but more like Chinese soy. It was still tasty, especially with sliced chilli. The crispy squid was calamari fritti but not too crispy. The mustard glazed sausages were actually normal hotdog sausages, and the prawn and chorizo open face sandwich was okay. The best sampler was the crispy cod fish. Also had a pint of John Smith, a sour sweet ale, and felt it was a tad light."
"This is a great pub. Good lively atmosphere and friendly staff. The food is lovely too. Can get busy so recommend booking a table like we did. We'll definitely be back next time we're in Portsmouth."
"Where to start. I have known this pub since 1984 - it was still 2 pubs in those days!! Over the years it became the Cold War Carriers crews pub of choice. More recently it is rapidly becoming the spiritual home of the Portsmouth Royal Navy (other pubs and other Navy based are available) I booked a table for 11AM to start off a works event with breakfast, beer and England RU. Keith and his staff could not have been more helpful. Great table, good price on the beer and for £3.99 what a breakfast!!! Be wary if you wish to venture here - it is popular and does get very busy, but is that not what great pubs are supposed to do? Keith and his Staff are doing a great job at keeping this pub at the heart of everything good on Portsmouth Hard"
"Fabulous atmosphere, great staff. Brilliant stop to have a drink in good company. Flat level entrance. Opposite bus station, and train station and excellent for visit to old navy base. Very old traditional pub. Car parks nearby food sold."
