Reviews of Sydney House
"Do NOT book. We booked and were advised payment would be taken on arrival, it wasn't, it was taken 5 months early! We phoned and the lady told us if we couldn't stay then we would receive a full refund. Then due to the pandemic and a national lockdown we could not travel and stay at the hotel. When we rang to discuss a refund the lady was very unprofessional and rude. She denied us a refund, going back on her word. We spoke to booking.com and they rang her too, she was equally as rude and vial to them. She said we could have a date change if we canceled the room. Upon emailing to try and arranged a date change (not that we wanted to stay after her rude, unprofessional and vial tone) we were asked to "refrain from contacting the hotel". We again rang booking.com, after they spoke to her we were refused a date change despite her previously saying we could. So we have lost our money that shouldn't have even been taken in the first place. Disgusting management and customer service. I disgusted with the way we have been spoken to. I understand the pandemic has hit this sector hard, however this is no excuse to treat customers in this way and certainly not the way to get future custom. We will NEVER be returning and I'd strongly advise against booking with them. After reading other reviews this is not a one off."
"Location very convenient since it is near the train station. Stayed in the quadruple room which had comfortable beds and clean bathroom; the fridge, microwave, toaster were useful for simple breakfast. Owner gave us a jar of milk for tea, which was nice! Strict check-in period with extra charges if outside the schedule. We were not allowed to leave our small luggage and backpack after check-out (at 10am) despite offer to pay small fee and come back at a convenient time, which made it very difficult for us since it was raining very, very hard outside (lasted the whole afternoon) and our train out of Plymouth was at night. We would only be allowed if we would pay for another extra night—which gave us the impression it wasn't a security issue but just profit. First time to encounter such inconsiderate inconvenience. Too bad because the property is pretty and well-maintained."
"A bit cluttered when you walk in the door but sort of homely, clean. I went with my partner and 6 yr old son, we were put at the very top, there was a double bed and a single bed which were quote comfy. I must say the windows were not child friendly as they open outwards from bottom to top so u could open them fully without any catch so any small child that likes climbing...doesn't bare thinking about! We had to be with my son most of the time that he was near the windows! Thete were wires and plug sockets / switches on the wall near the single bed, again not very child friendly. We had a kettle toaster, sink & bowl, plates, cups etc bathroom with shower (was just more than a trickle), nothing at the bthrm window although the glass was mottled. At the front of Sydney House there wasn't much in the way of parking. There is no carpark & a lot of the roads have double yellow lines on them, so you had to keep watch if someone moved out of their space you moved your car in asap!! Also my partner was told or read that there was breakfast, there is not. We had a small kitchen & there is another bit in sn alcove on the top floor with a washing machine, cooker and some other bits' pieces to share with other ppl."
"ABSOLUTE DISGRACE. the owner or manager whoever she is, is so rude and has no people skills! First she answered the door when it's raining on the phone and made me stand outside for at least five minutes while she finished her phone call!! THEN the next morning check out was meant to b 10am and I was not 10am yet but so she went into my room and took my bags out and put them in her office and got the cleaner to clean my room. When I told her that she can't do that she shouted back at me !! I wouldn't sleep there if I was homeless. Rude woman!!"
"Strange blend of old and new. The en suite still had the labels the retailer applied. Adequate electric shower sink and toilet. The newness of the carpets vinyl and curtains clash with the tired mattresses linens and towels. Room had a kitchen with stainless steel sink microwave two ring electric hob fridge and small freezer. The small TV is less entertainment than the décor in the hallways and landings. There is no reception this is truly a guest house. I slept well my Wife did not. The main door has three bell pushes and a note saying press both. Our room 5 / 6 had two numbers two beds. It was clean through out. Very much a work away from home kind of place."
