About John Wesley's New Room
John Wesley's New Room is more than just a typical establishment. It's a place where history and religion come together to offer you a unique experience that will transport you back in time. Located at the heart of Bristol, at 36 The Horsefair, this café, church, museum, place of worship, and point of interest, is a must-see for those interested in the history of Christianity and the legacy of John Wesley.
For starters, the New Room is the oldest Methodist chapel in the world, built by John Wesley himself back in 1739. Its architecture and décor match perfectly with the Georgian style of the time, making it an excellent example of early Methodism. When you enter the building, you will be stepping back into the 18th century, surrounded by original features such as the lectern, pulpit, pews, and stained-glass windows. The museum showcases a collection of artifacts and memorabilia that narrate Wesley's life, ministry, and the growth of the Methodist movement.
Besides its rich history, the New Room also offers a cozy café, making it a welcoming space where you can rest and recharge. The café prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients, serving a range of homemade cakes, sandwiches, and soups. You can sit and enjoy your meal, mingling with locals or fellow travelers, while admiring the building's architecture.
The New Room is still a place of worship, and you are welcome to join their worship services, prayer meetings, or Bible studies. You can immerse yourself in the spirituality and devotion of the place, understanding how important faith and social justice were for the Methodist movement. The New room is also regularly hosting concerts, lectures, workshops, and other events that you can participate in.
In conclusion, John Wesley's New Room is a multi-faceted institution that offers visitors a truly unique experience. As you explore the building and learn about Methodism's beginnings, you also immerse yourself in the vibrant life of Bristol. You can satisfy all your senses, from the delicious homemade food in the café to the melodious music or worshipful prayers. Make sure to add John Wesley's New Room to your itinerary the next time you visit Bristol.

Reviews of John Wesley's New Room
"A lovely little chapel in the heart of the city nice to come to sit and take some silent the. They have books in the corner and a lovely cafe staff are friendly and helpful."
"I’m giving this a 3 star because of modern adaptations. I love the place, the history is incomparable. The issue is that they are using this space in advertisements for anti-Christian events. For example they are openly welcoming LGBTQ+ couples attending the church and hosting pride events. I’m all for LGBTQ+ events happening outside the church because why should everyone have to live a Christian life that’s not a Christian? But the issue comes when churches try to change the bible to adapt to the current world. John Wesley lived to spread the gospel, the gospel is the same yesterday, today, and forever. We must stop changing the bible to fit the world - but change the world to fit the bible. As it’s commanded in the bible. It’s Christian 101."
"A splendid little museum dedicated to John Wesley, a dead chap of many talents. Guides/volunteers have a wealth of knowledge and are very helpful. I enjoyed learning about the Methodist church and John's outdoor preaching. I continue to live in hope that one day there'll be a museum all about me in Bristol, but I seem to have a bit of an image problem at the moment. I'm working hard to rectify that."
"evangelist, who was a leader of a revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism. The societies he founded became the dominant form of the independent Methodist movement that continues to this day."
"Wonderful Methodist Church, were John Wesley preached. This was the very first Methodist Church. Lovely cafe at the back of the chapel were wholesome snacks can be had. Nice shop and well worth having a look at the museum. 10/10"
