"Came on steak night had a rump with chips and onion rings and a pint of Estrella for £15, quality of the food and presentation was fantastic. We also had the honey an feta sweet potato fries which were delicious. I will be going back."
"I have visited Velvet several times since it opened. During that time it’s noticeable that the range of spirits, from the relatively humble likes of Jack Daniels Old No. 7 to sublime blended Scotch whiskies such as Johnny Walker Blue Label there’s something to cater for all tastes, from regular bar fixtures such as JD No.7 to spirits exotic enough to pander to the exacting tastes & put a strain on the deep pockets of the connoisseurs out there amongst us! On draught in addition to resident ales such as Manchester brewer Shindigger’s Mango Unchained Tropical IPA there are ever changing guests from Birkenhead’s Glen Affric Brewery, Thatchers Gold & Somersby blackberry ciders & delicious Young’s London Stout, & there’s soon to be a signature Velvet beer brewed exclusively for the bar by Holts of Manchester. Also the menu has evolved considerably during that time, & is something that owner-manager Dean is constantly looking to refresh & expand with the help & guidance of his very talented head chef Ryan. Vivid memories of late nights as I & many locals knew it as the Indira sprang instantly to mind when I first went in. Rest assured, though, that whilst Dean will welcome you warmly & help you navigate the expansive selection of food & drinks available, he’ll not hover by your table in painful silence as Indira owner Barry was notorious for doing! The blueprint is essentially as it was, with the familiar booths on the right, but with the bar area significantly opened out from what it was, including a lovely seated area by the “fire” (burning on the big screen TV), which somehow makes me feel warm when I’m sat near to it, even though I know it’s just my mind playing tricks on me! If you’re a fan of cocktails, Scott & his team have a wealth of experience between them ready to put to good use in conjuring up whatever deceptively strong blends of spirits & mixers may take your fancy. If you have a yen for something decidedly gothic, dry ice is on hand to make cocktails that smoke that’d be right up Wednesday Addams’ street, & at the other end of the scale flaming cocktails are also available to potentially add yet more drama to your drinking experience! Scott told me his favourite cocktail is an ‘Old Fashioned’ – after the requisite amount of mixing & characteristically dramatic shaking I was presented with what I can only describe as a truly stunning drink! If you’re still keen for a taste of a cocktail but are the designated driver, mocktail versions of just about every cocktail you could wish to try are also available. There is also talk of Scott running a cocktail-making masterclass in the weeks ahead – if like me you’re fascinated by the art of cocktail making it’ll be a great chance to step behind the bar & learn the ropes under the supervision of a seasoned cocktail mixer! Favourite meals from the menu include Bang-Bang chicken, barbeque ribs, Katsu chicken curry & Sunday roast beef & Yorkshire pudding. Very much looking forward to trying the Asian spicy salad, which as I understand it is quite similar to a Thai spicy beef salad, & if you’re very brave & fancy tackling one, Velvet is quite a rarity locally in offering the fearsomely Fred Flintsone-sized Tomahawk steak alongside delicious rump, sirloin, T-bone & fillet steaks. Made for two to share, brave (or foolish depending on how you look at it!) diners can attempt a climb of this culinary Everest with a Tomahawk should they so wish! The bar is also very doggie-friendly, so if you're out & about with your furry friend, know that they'll be made to feel more than welcome too! Also love some of the details in the decor – the plaque referencing Schrodinger’s Cat in one of the booths is just brilliant! It feels like a lovely home from home – when I shared those sentiments with Dean he laughed & pointed to the wall, upon which hangs a sign simply reading: ‘Welcome Home’! So to sum up, more than worth stopping by if you’re passing through Hoylake & are in the market for exquisite food & drinks in comfortable, stylish surroundings!"
