Reviews of Walton Colliery Nature Park
"Beautiful place for a walk. We visited on a December morning, after a night of heavy rainfall. We had our 1 year old in his basic pram, and were easily able to walk the red path around the colliery and get to the war memorial. There is free parking on site, but no toilet or cafe. Fab walk, will definitely be back more often now!"
"A nice old reclaimed colliery, that is mostly nature reserve. A couple of lakes that have plenty of wild life. There is 2 places you can cut under the train tracks via bridges. To the west ( from main entrance ) takes you through and up towards Doncaster road. To the north brings you to oakenshaw lane and to part of the disused Barnsley canal. There are some Horse riders ( children ) top right area. So if like me you dont like horses maybe want to avoid it or jump into bushes while they pass."
"Fabulous green space to walk in. Nature claims back an old colliery and now it is a wildlife sanctuary and nature reserve. Free to walk here and free to park. Lots of waterfowl on the lakes. Dragonflies too. Very peaceful and serene place. Information boards with map plan on. Watch where you tread though, as dog owners don't seem all that bothered about picking up their dawglet's poohs. Basic really, got a dog, pick up after it. Would you leave your kids used nappies lying around here too?? Tut tut."
"Absolutely love this place! Perfect place to spend an afternoon having a picnic or just taking the kids to feed the ducks, geese etc. Also lots of photo opportunities for budding nature/landscape photographers. Most of the paths are pushchair friendly. From the car park take the path at the left which runs along side the railway tracks. It's a much easier walk and prams etc are fine."
"Nice place for walking with the kids and birdwatching... sadly ruined by unbelievable amounts of dog poo on the paths near the car park. You can actually smell it as soon as you get out of the car. Not so much at the far end, because lazy people, who don't tidy up after their dogs, can't mamage a walk more than 200 metres from the carpark. We couldn't enjoy the views because we were too busy tiptoeing around huge piles of dogger. I feel a bit embarrassed to be a human."
