Gray and built in 1917 by prominent physician William C. Ellis. This three-story house with a basement features a unique blend of Prairie Style and Craftsman Style elements, hardwood floors, hand-painted chandeliers, and imported mahogany wood trim. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Phoenix Historic Property Register, the Ellis-Shackelford House is the only unaltered survivor of early North Central Avenue mansions in Phoenix. Once home to Dr. Ellis and his family, the house has since housed a boys' home, the Arizona Historical Society, and now serves as the headquarters for Arizona Humanities. The City of Phoenix, which owns the property, received funding for the preservation and rehabilitation of the house in 2006. Arizona Humanities, along with the City of Phoenix, uses the house for office and meeting space while fulfilling their mission of building a just and civil society through the exploration of shared human experiences.
