Flatwoods, with an estimated population of 7,243 as of the 2020 census, is a proud part of the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). Under the leadership of Mayor Buford Hurley II, our city strives to maintain its rich heritage while embracing growth and development.
Our city has a unique history, originally known as Advance and later renamed Cheap, after a beloved local minister. In 1938, the city was incorporated under its current name, inspired by the flat wooded landscapes that characterize the region.
Flatwoods is often described as a "bedroom community," with many residents commuting to work at nearby employers such as CSX Railroad, Marathon Oil, and Kings Daughters Medical Center. Despite this, our city boasts proximity to excellent educational institutions, including Ohio University Southern Campus, Marshall University, and Ashland Community & Technical College, all within a short drive.
