Nestled at 225 Cherohala Skyway, Tellico Plains, Tennessee, this National Scenic Byway promises an unforgettable experience. Opened in 1996, the Cherohala Skyway is a marvel of engineering, traversing the majestic landscapes of the Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee and the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina. The name "Cherohala" is a nod to these forests, combining "Chero" from Cherokee and "hala" from Nantahala.

Spanning over 40 miles, this two-lane paved road connects Tellico Plains, Tennessee, with Robbinsville, North Carolina. As you embark on this scenic drive, you'll journey from elevations of 900 feet to over 5,400 feet, offering spectacular views and 15 scenic overlooks. The road is maintained by the Tennessee and North Carolina Departments of Transportation, ensuring a smooth and safe ride.

"Great place to drive through and experience the outdoors at! Be sure to keep a watchful eye for critters. Be wary of cyclists too, as they can be unwilling to share the road at times with motor vehicles. Other than that, there's plenty to look for here, and there are places to pull over and check out such as viewpoints, places to eat, gardens, and more."

"Gorgeous trip. I hit it at the WRONG time on the way back through. 4-5ft visibility in extremely fast-moving fog. The NC side had almost no road markings and was even harder to navigate. 5-15mph the whole way. If I didn't have very good glasses, there's no way we could've kept going."

"Picked the wrong time to go there. Main road was closed by Tellico plains, had to detour thru back roads,, not good on a motorcycle. Was beautiful once I finally made it to the skyway. Lots of overlooks for viewing. Plenty of rest areas. Not many people on the road. Was expecting heavy traffic,, was almost empty. I would love to try it again when they get the road fixed. Cell phones don't get signal out there, gps can't find anything. You are on your own when you get there. Stick to the main road if you can."

"Great road to cruise on and experience the autumn colors (if you can time it right). Would also have been a great ride on the motorcycle if the weather was a little warmer. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area"

"Anyone who is into great views (rivaling those of the Blue Ridge Parkway) AND fun driving should traverse this road! Tail of the dragon people - you will like this road! Don't forget to stop for lunch at T.Dubbs on your way."
