Discover the Utopian Legacy at New Harmony State Historic Site

Located at 410 Main Street, New Harmony, Indiana, the New Harmony State Historic Site invites you to explore the fascinating history of two early American utopian communities. This museum offers a unique glimpse into the innovative visions of the Harmony Society and Robert Owen's Owenites, both of whom aimed to create ideal societies in the early 19th century.

The Harmonists and Their Vision

Founded by George Rapp, the Harmony Society settled in Indiana in 1814, bringing with them a pursuit of Christian perfection and self-sufficiency. Their community thrived by producing a variety of goods traded across the nation and beyond. Discover their original construction techniques and explore the numerous log, frame, and brick structures that stand as a testament to their industrious spirit.

Owen's Utopian Dream

In 1825, Robert Owen purchased New Harmony to create a model community focused on education and social equality. While his "Community of Equality" dissolved by 1827, Owen's efforts left a lasting impact on American scientific and educational thought. Visit the site to learn about the scholars, educators, and early feminists who contributed to this transformative period.
