Founded in 1840, Benton County was named in honor of Thomas Hart Benton, a prominent U.S. Senator from Missouri and an ardent supporter of westward expansion, famously known as "Old Bullion." His legacy lives on, not only in our county's name but also in places like Bentonville, Indiana.
Benton County boasts a proud historical narrative, from being one of Indiana's leading agricultural communities to being the home of the legendary Dan Patch, a world champion harness horse. Dan Patch captivated the nation in the early 1900s with his record-breaking speed, becoming an icon in the sport of harness racing.
In recent years, Benton County has embraced the future with the establishment of Indiana's first wind farm. Our county now features one of the largest single concentrated wind farms in the United States, with over 620 wind turbines gracing our landscape.
