About the Business

Conrad Station Savanna

Welcome to Conrad Station Savanna: A Hidden Gem in Lake Village, Indiana

Discover the natural beauty and historical intrigue of Conrad Station Savanna, a 360-acre sand savanna located on County Road 725 North in Lake Village, Indiana. Managed collaboratively by The Nature Conservancy and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources' Division of Nature Preserves, this unique park offers a glimpse into both Indiana's ecological diversity and its rich history.

Explore Nature and History

Conrad Station Savanna is a sanctuary of rolling sand hills adorned with black and white oaks, as well as a thriving prairie restoration area on the southern flat grounds. This remarkable landscape is not only home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, including red-headed woodpeckers and glass lizards, but also the remnants of the historic town of Conrad, founded in 1908 by Jennie M. Conrad. Although the town thrived for about 30 years, it now lives on through the foundations scattered across the savanna.

Trails and Wildlife Watching

Embark on a 2-mile trail that meanders through the savanna, complete with informational signs about Jennie M. Conrad and the art of savanna management. For a shorter journey, a 1.8-mile loop trail with interpretive signs offers insights into our ongoing restoration efforts. Whether you're here in spring to enjoy wildflowers, seeking shade in the summer, or marveling at the autumn foliage, Conrad Station Savanna promises an unforgettable experience.

Conservation in Action

Our dedicated volunteers and partners, including Cedar Lake Fish & Game Club and the Indiana Heritage Trust, work tirelessly to restore and maintain this unique ecosystem. Through the removal of invasive species and the re-introduction of prescribed fires, we aim to recreate pre-settlement conditions and establish Conrad Station Savanna as a premier Black Oak Barrens preserve.

Plan Your Visit

Easily accessible from I-65 and U.S. 41, Conrad Station Savanna offers ample parking and a serene escape into nature. Please remember to respect the wildlife and natural surroundings during your visit. For birdwatchers, Kankakee Sands provides a fantastic opportunity to observe a variety of species, but always exercise caution and ensure not to impede traffic.

Conrad Station Savanna is a treasure trove of natural wonders and historical remnants, waiting to be explored. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, history buff, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, this savanna offers something for everyone.

Visit us and immerse yourself in the natural splendor and historical charm of Conrad Station Savanna. We look forward to welcoming you!

"You cannot say enough positive things about the work that The Nature Conservancy has performed in this area. 25 years of remediation have yielded a gorgeous, is just a tiny fraction, return of the American grasslands."

"Pleasant hike. Great history. Everyone should watch the movie, "The Grand Kanakee Marsh, the Everglades of the North". Watching the movie gives context and makes this place come alive."

"This is my favorite trail at Kankakee Sands! Partially shaded and a relaxing hike. Huge variety of plants, animals, and insects. There were a ton of different wildflowers that covered the area! Definitely recommend if you are in the area."

"Really enjoyed this short trail. I have lived in Northern Indiana my whole life and never realized there was a town that is no longer a town. Pretty crazy! Also there was a massive lake that was drained. Definitely worth checking out this trail if you are a history buff."
