About the Business

Thomson Memorial Cemetery

Welcome to Thomson Memorial Cemetery, a historic and serene resting place located at 212 Tom Watson Way, Thomson, Georgia. Established in 1853, our cemetery holds a rich heritage that began when the Bethany Methodist Church relocated and formed the First United Methodist Church on Main Street. The land was generously deeded by James R. Wilson, and the earliest marked grave belongs to Mary Sutton, who passed away on June 5, 1855.

Our cemetery is a testament to the 19th-century "Rural Cemetery Movement," which sought to create more picturesque and healthful settings away from traditional churchyards. This movement transformed cemeteries into park-like spaces, encouraging recreation, picnics, and family gatherings. Today, Thomson Memorial Cemetery continues to embody this vision with its tranquil and reflective environment.

In 1932, the community came together to replace the original wire fence with the elegant iron one that still surrounds our grounds today. As of 2008, we are honored to care for 1,086 graves, both marked and unmarked, preserving the memories and stories of those who came before us.

One of the notable features in our cemetery is the Confederate (C.S.A.) Grave Marker, inspired by the Southern Cross of Honor medals. The marker displays the dates 1861 and 1865, representing the start and end of the Civil War, along with the Latin phrase "Deo Vindice," meaning "God Is Our Vindicator." The reverse side of the marker bears the letters C.S.A., symbolizing the Confederate States of America.

Thomson Memorial Cemetery is more than just a resting place; it is a cherished part of our community's history. We invite you to visit and experience the peace and beauty that our historic grounds offer.
