Welcome to "The Captains' Return," a remarkable tribute to the legendary explorers Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and their loyal Newfoundland dog, Seaman. Located on the scenic riverfront of St. Louis, Missouri, this awe-inspiring bronze sculpture captures the spirit of adventure and triumph that marked the explorers' return journey.
Commissioned to commemorate the bicentennial of Lewis and Clark's return on September 23, 2006, this three-and-a-half-ton masterpiece stands as a testament to their indelible mark on American history. The installation, a collaboration with six governmental agencies, was engineered to withstand the Mississippi River's floodwaters, creating a dynamic visual experience when the statue appears to sail with the river's ebb and flow.
Created by renowned sculptor Harry Weber, a St. Louis native and Princeton University art history alumnus, "The Captains' Return" is a national Lewis and Clark site designated by the Federal Parks Department. Weber, celebrated for his ability to infuse human emotion and power into his work, crafted this sculpture with meticulous attention to detail. Each figure was constructed in multiple pieces, with Clark's figure alone comprising sixty parts, assembled like a giant jigsaw puzzle.
Weber's artistic vision sought to capture the complex emotions of the explorers at their journey's end. Lewis's face reflects a mix of triumph and introspection, while Clark embodies the dream of responsibility and future challenges. This sculpture not only portrays historical figures but also celebrates the extraordinary achievements possible when humans rise to meet their challenges.
Explore "The Captains' Return" and immerse yourself in a moment of history, skillfully captured in bronze, that continues to inspire and awe visitors from around the world.
