"Despite what they claim, they are absolutely NOT a “first come, first serve” shelter. After being dropped off at 16:00 after being discharged from the hospital, myself and a group of two others waited two hours, assuming we would be guaranteed a bed that night as we were absolutely the first people there. But that’s not how it works. If you had been to the shelter the night previously, you had first dibs. So your only chance of having space is if those people do not show, which, as we were told “never really happens.” To throw salt into the wound, three people were actually LATE, and would not make it to the shelter by the time the doors closed. So despite being the first people to the door two hours ago, we watched as people who hadn’t been there at all were served before us. They’re by no means “first come, first serve.” This is a serious problem in St. Louis, and the fact that this church contributes so heavily to the problem itself is shocking."
