About the Business

Marshall Forest

Welcome to Marshall Forest, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of northwest Georgia on Horseleg Creek Road Southwest, Rome. Spanning 301 acres, this pristine park is home to one of the last stands of old-growth pine-hardwood timber in the region, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the natural beauty and ecological diversity of the Ridge and Valley Province.

Once part of the Cherokee Nation's lands, Marshall Forest is a sanctuary for nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Here, you can explore a rich tapestry of over 300 plant species and 55 tree species across three distinct plant communities: pine-oak, chestnut oak, and mixed hardwood forest. The forest's dynamic ecosystem is shaped by natural events like ice storms and fires, which help maintain its diverse plant life.

Marshall Forest is also a vital habitat for a variety of wildlife. It boasts Georgia's largest population of the endangered large-flowered skullcap, alongside a vibrant community of frogs, salamanders, snakes, and numerous bird species. This ecological treasure was recognized as Georgia's first National Natural Landmark in 1966, highlighting its significance and need for preservation.

Visitors can enjoy the serene beauty of the forest through the Big Pine Braille Trail, which features interpretive braille signs for an inclusive experience. Additionally, a specially designed gravel trail ensures accessibility for most wheelchairs with wide tires, allowing everyone to immerse themselves in the tranquility of this natural wonder.

Marshall Forest is actively involved in conservation efforts, supported by initiatives like the Alternative Spring Break program. Volunteers from across the country join forces to protect this unique environment by removing invasive species and aiding in forest management.

Whether you're seeking a peaceful retreat, an educational journey, or an opportunity to contribute to conservation, Marshall Forest offers a unique and enriching experience for all visitors. Come and discover the natural wonders of this cherished preserve in Rome, Georgia.

"I was excited for this hike. But the main trail was so overgrown that the path was covered up that we didnt continue. Whoever is responsible for this trail please maintain it in the summer so we can enjoy this trail."

"I'm not sure if we went the wrong way or what bc that was not an easy family friendly hike.....lots of overgrown areas and mostly uphill! My 15 and 12 year old were exhausted. We had three dogs with us and they were exhausted! We followed the trail entrance to the right with the blue tree markers and yea wasn't easy at all lol so maybe we went the wrong way?"

"Looking for a nature hiking trail without the 2-4 hour drive to get there? Marshall Forest. Located within central Rome. From Shorter Ave, Marshall Forest is 1.4 miles down Horseleg Creek Rd. There are 2 hiking trails. One, named The Big Pine Braille Trail, is low-level challenging, although you still need to be stable on your feet and wear proper hiking shoes. It's approx a 1/3 mile loop and doesn't have steep inclines. Along the path are several information posts written in braille. The other trail is for the more able-bodied hiker. The loop is approx 2 miles. At times a bit steep, but meanders around the hills enough to not be too strenuous. At the halfway point you will have climbed approx 345 ft in elevation. Wonderful scenic view."

"Once part of the Cherokee Nation’s lands, Marshall Forest covers 301 acres of pine-hardwood forest in Floyd County, near Rome in northwest Georgia. The site is one of the last remaining stands of old-growth forest in the Ridge and Valley Province, a geographical corridor that runs from Pennsylvania to Alabama. Ranging in elevation from 600-900 feet, the site is home to over 300 species of plants and 55 tree species in 3 distinct plant communities: pine-oak, chestnut oak, and mixed hardwood forest. It is thought that periodic ice storms (like the 1993 blizzard) and fires open the canopy for pine growth, preventing domination by a single plant community."
