About the Business

Welcome to The Beard and Robinson Stores, a historic gem nestled in the heart of Brooklyn’s vibrant Red Hook neighborhood. Located at 499 Van Brunt Street, Brooklyn, New York 11231, our storied building stands as a testament to the rich industrial heritage of the area. Originally constructed in the 1860s and 70s by visionary builders Jeremiah P. Robinson and William Beard, this iconic structure was part of a grand expansion to support New York Harbor's burgeoning shipping industry post-Civil War.

The Beard and Robinson Stores were once a bustling hub for grain terminals, warehouses, wharfs, and shipyards, strategically positioned to handle goods arriving from the Great Lakes and the Erie Canal. Today, our building retains its historic charm, featuring 250 beautifully restored arched iron shutters and the original heavy timber construction that speaks to its storied past. Visitors might even discover remnants of coffee and cocoa beans nestled in the original floorboards, a nod to its warehousing legacy.

In the present day, The Beard and Robinson Stores is home to a vibrant mix of tenants, including Hot Wood Arts and NY Water Taxi, offering a blend of creativity and connectivity to the community. Whether you're drawn by its rich history, unique architecture, or the thriving arts scene, The Beard and Robinson Stores continues to be a beacon of Red Hook’s enduring spirit. Come visit us and step into a piece of Brooklyn's industrial past, reimagined for the future.
