About the Business
Welcome to the former site of The Union League Club of Brooklyn, a landmark steeped in history and architectural grandeur. Located at 19-29 Rogers Avenue, in the heart of Crown Heights North, this magnificent building stands as a testament to Brooklyn's vibrant past and its role in shaping the city's social and political landscape.
Originally built in 1889, this Romanesque Revival masterpiece was designed by the renowned Danish-born architect Peter J. Lauritzen, who was celebrated for his exquisite urban mansions and notable structures throughout Brooklyn. The Union League Club of Brooklyn was not just an architectural marvel; it was a hub of social and political activity, bringing together the elite of Brooklyn's Republican society during the late 19th century.
The building boasted impressive features, including its own power plant and generator, a striking observation tower, and a façade adorned with brownstone busts of Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. Inside, it housed a grand ballroom, dining and conference rooms, a library, guest accommodations, and even a shooting range and bowling alley. It was a venue for influential gatherings, including political dinners and lectures by prominent figures such as Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington.
As the political tides shifted and Brooklyn's landscape evolved, the club eventually merged with its Manhattan counterpart, and the building found new life as the Unity Club, serving the Jewish community and later as a yeshiva. Today, it serves as the Grant Square Senior Center, continuing its legacy of community service.
Recognized as a landmark and part of the Crown Heights North Historic District since 2007, this building is a cherished piece of Brooklyn's architectural and cultural heritage. Whether you're a history enthusiast, an architecture aficionado, or a local resident, the former Union League Club of Brooklyn offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, inviting you to explore the stories and significance of this iconic site.
