About the Business

Domino Sugar Refinery Shell

Welcome to the Domino Sugar Refinery Shell, a unique fusion of history and modernity located at 314 Kent Avenue, Brooklyn, New York. This iconic landmark, originally a 19th-century sugar refinery, has been transformed by the innovative minds at Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU) into a stunning 12-storey glass office building. The Refinery stands as a testament to Brooklyn's evolving architectural landscape, blending the charm of Romanesque Revival architecture with contemporary design.

The centerpiece of the Domino Sugar Refinery site's redevelopment, this project, overseen by Two Trees Management, preserves the historic facade while introducing a state-of-the-art office environment. The new glass structure is ingeniously set within the existing shell, creating a harmonious balance between old and new. With metal beams anchoring the glass to the original masonry, this design allows natural light to illuminate the interiors and supports a vertical garden, enhancing the building's aesthetic and environmental appeal.

Inside, the Refinery offers 460,000 square feet of versatile office space, including a vast penthouse under a breathtaking glazed vaulted roof. The building is powered entirely by electricity, reflecting a commitment to sustainability. On the ground floor, a triple-height atrium lobby features amenities and retail spaces, while a replica LED Domino Sugar logo adds a nostalgic touch to the river-facing facade.

Visitors and office inhabitants can enjoy sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline and the vibrant Williamsburg neighborhood. The Refinery is surrounded by a six-acre park designed by Field Operations, providing a serene urban oasis along the East River.

Join us at the Domino Sugar Refinery Shell to experience a remarkable blend of history, innovation, and community spirit in the heart of Brooklyn.

"They added modern glass office space inside the original facade of the original 1882 Domino Sugar Refinery. Betwwen the facade and the glass office space there are trees in between!!! 4 tanks still exist next to the volleyball sand court. Plenty of soace to sit and watch people, dog, view of Manhattan, taco vending area, dog park, kids playground. There is plenty of room for locals, tourists, kids, and dogs!!!"

"I walked around the site years ago when it was being gutted. This past weekend I saw it complete from the East River in a kayak, and it looks impressive from that distance. I'm glad they decided to save this bit of industrial Brooklyn from the wrecking ball entirely (as has happened with so much else)."
