"February 20th, 2019 One more morning with a temperature in the low teens. Gallantly, I shrug it off, thinking it's one more day of cold that earns one more day of warmth later. "We are putting a big down payment on spring", I have often said this time of year, just before the arrival of March. Last night, I resisted taking images of the Super Snow moon through my telescopic lens. Two photographers who take a daily set of the latest curiosities for Instagram nailed close-ups of the moon, craters and seas nicely defined. I didn't need to go after that one. I also believe we have enough bald eagle photographers covering the flock making Murphy's Island on Lake Onondaga into a famous preserve. Murphy's Island stands next to Destiny Mall, the nation's sixth largest mall. A platform that serviced the OnTrack trains arriving at the mall has become a gathering place for the wildlife photographers making the scene. The bald eagles have taken to circling flights around the metal dome of that shopping center. County planners have blueprints to build a bike path through the island preserve, where now gathers over fifty-four eagles. Murphy's Island has tall trees growing out of its soil, and that soil has traces of heavy metals and toxic chemicals pulled from the lake bottom by dredges. The eagles love the island although toxic soils should be removed and replaced with clean fill. Remediating the soil will require cutting down the trees and cutting down the trees will scare off the flock. Needless to say, a fight between the county, environmentalists, and mall authorities awaits. I would love to side with the Onondaga Indians and the tribes of the Finger Lakes. Keep the cyclists off the island and let the eagle population increase. And think of a strategy to protect shoppers, who might be frightened if eagles swoop down and carry away bags full of lingerie from PINK."
