About the Business

Wertheim Wildlife

Welcome to Wertheim Wildlife

Nestled on the picturesque south shore of Long Island, Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge is a sanctuary of natural beauty and biodiversity. Established in 1947, this 2,550-acre refuge, located at 360 Smith Road, Shirley, New York 11967, offers a unique glimpse into the serene landscapes and diverse ecosystems that thrive here.

At Wertheim Wildlife, the Carmans River gracefully winds through the refuge, a scenic New York state-designated river that supports a rich array of habitats. From oak-pine woodlands and grasslands to fresh, brackish, and saltwater wetlands, each environment attracts an abundance of wildlife. Visitors can witness the thriving presence of white-tailed deer, osprey, muskrat, fox, turtles, frogs, and fish. The refuge is also a vital haven for waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, and songbirds, offering a peaceful retreat for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike.

As the heart of the National Wildlife Refuge System, Wertheim Wildlife is committed to the conservation and restoration of wildlife and their habitats. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the refuge employs scientifically sound management practices to ensure a balanced approach to conservation, benefiting both wildlife and people. Visitors can explore the Refuge Complex Headquarters and Visitor Center, where they can learn more about the ongoing efforts to protect and enhance the natural world.

Throughout the year, the refuge is alive with hundreds of plant, fish, bird, and mammal species. Whether you are a year-round resident or a seasonal visitor, Wertheim promises a rewarding experience. With quiet patience, there is always something new to discover.

Join us at Wertheim Wildlife, where we work hand in hand with nature to conserve, protect, and enhance the beauty of our natural world for generations to come.
