Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge

Welcome to Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge

Nestled on the south shore of Long Island, the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge is a sanctuary for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. Established in 1947, this tranquil refuge spans 2,550 acres and is uniquely bisected by the scenic Carmans River, one of New York's largest and most picturesque waterways.

Wertheim is a mosaic of diverse habitats, including oak-pine woodlands, expansive grasslands, and a variety of wetlands—fresh, brackish, and saltwater. These thriving ecosystems are home to an array of wildlife, from white-tailed deer and osprey to muskrats, foxes, turtles, frogs, and a multitude of fish species. Birdwatchers will delight in the presence of waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, and songbirds that find refuge here.

At the heart of the refuge lies the complex headquarters and a welcoming visitor center, where guests can learn more about the vital conservation efforts that define the National Wildlife Refuge System. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Wertheim employs cutting-edge conservation practices to preserve and restore the natural habitats essential for the survival of native species.

Visitors to Wertheim can explore the refuge's rich biodiversity through a variety of recreational activities, from hiking and birdwatching to educational programs. "I enjoyed the International Migratory Birds Day event in addition to the usual park grounds and trails. I was also happy to be able to purchase a NPS park pass at their office."

"Beautiful scenery and well maintained trails for hiking. Pretty foliage in the fall. No entry fee and not crowded when I visited on a Sunday on October."

"Hiked Black Tupelo trail to Indian Landing: fewer river views than from White Oak trail, but trail itself is quite pleasant and photogenic. Mosquitoes are not as bad as in some other preserves, still bug spray or wipes are recommended. Very nice visitor center with restrooms and dark room presenting bird songs."

"It's a nice place to hike. There are a few trails you can hike on. Don't forget to enter the visitors center. There are restrooms and a small museum. They also have a store. Leave your pets and bicycles behind, as you can not take them on the trail."
