"I first met Margaret, the friendly and intrepid founder and owner of Elite Concept, back in 1992. I was terribly self-conscious about my bald head. I had suffered through dreadful and useless hair transplant surgery by the Manhattan doctor who was usually credited with originating the procedure. After that failure, I grew the hair on the side of my head long and sprayed it into place over the bald area. A bad solution. All that changed after I met Margaret. She had worked for a hair replacement business. With the support of her husband she started her own hair replacement business. She proved to be a natural entrepreneur who soon had a thriving business in hair replacement for men, and for female cancer patients. I was pleased from the start, even though at that time the materials were not as good as now and the piece often needed coloring or addition of hair at monthly maintenance. The glue in use made my scalp itch for a week. For the last 15 years or so it has been a lark. Very comfortable and easy to care for. I never even thought of myself as bald anymore since I was only bald one hour per month while undergoing maintenance. There are different plans with different price levels. I chose a pretty high end plan that provided me with four new pieces a year and monthly maintenance. No outrageous Manhattan prices, but still the cost of a one week vacation cruise to Alaska on an expensive line, or a trip to Europe. Worth it to not be bald. In all these years only one person ever called me out for wearing a hairpiece, and it was a middle aged man of Arab descent in a dark newspaper-candy store. I'm sure others must have known or suspected and never said anything. But probably not all that many. Where I live, people like to let you know that they know something you hoped that they didn't know. People also like to gossip. Nothing ever got back to me. No suspicious questions asked of me. My own parents told me that it looked real and natural, and my mother was not one to lie just to be polite. The success of the hair replacement is tied in tightly with the people providing the service. Margaret took great pride in her work and would often spend the last five minutes of a maintenance visit with a pick comb, putting each individual hair in the right place. although I told her that in a few hours my head would be on a pillow. After her beautiful sister Debbie had raised her children to the right age, she studied hairdressing and Margaret trained her, several times using me as the practice subject. The business is located in a palatial salon that Margaret had built to her own satisfaction, and the monthly maintenance trip is like a social occasion, drinking good coffee and complaining about all the calories that are in the goodies left out to snack on."
