Nestled along the scenic hillsides of the Monongahela River, Whetzel Preserve Conservation Area offers a unique blend of natural beauty and rugged adventure. Spanning 212 acres of steeply wooded terrain, this conservation area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
The preserve boasts three miles of challenging, uncharted hiking trails that provide commanding views of the river valley. However, visitors should note that there is no designated parking at Whetzel Preserve. Access involves a steep uphill hike from Bunola Drive or, alternatively, by requesting permission from a neighboring private landowner for access from the top of the ridge. It is the responsibility of visitors to ensure they find safe and legal parking.
Whetzel Preserve is a popular destination for local hunters during the ALT hunting season. Open hunting is permitted, but hunters are required to read the Hunting Policy and apply for a free permit before hunting on any conservation area.
Conserved by the Allegheny Land Trust in 2003, this area, also known as “Mon Valley Slopes” or “Elkhorn Slopes,” plays a crucial role in providing habitat for wildlife and stormwater filtration. The land is dedicated to Joshua C. Whetzel Jr., whose remarkable contributions to conservation in western Pennsylvania include protecting over 30,000 acres during his tenure as President of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy from 1969 to 1978.
For those seeking a slightly less rustic but equally rewarding hiking experience, the nearby Dead Man’s Hollow Conservation Area is highly recommended.
