Moses Carper Trail at Riverview Park
Address: 394 Riverview Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15214, United States
Type: Park
Nestled within the scenic expanse of Riverview Park on Pittsburgh’s North Side, the Moses Carper Trail offers a serene escape into nature. Established in 1894, Riverview Park is a treasured jewel that showcases the natural beauty and rich history of the area, even predating the annexation of the city of Allegheny to Pittsburgh in 1907.
Spanning 259 acres, Riverview Park is renowned for its dense woodlands, steep topography, and extensive network of trails that cater to hikers, joggers, and horseback riders alike. The park's diverse landscape includes wooded trails, dramatic hillsides, and the tranquil Mairdale watershed. Key attractions within the park include the landmark Allegheny Observatory, a visitor’s center, a swimming pool, and an activities building.
Visitors to the Moses Carper Trail can enjoy a variety of amenities, including a playground, ball field, picnic shelters, and seasonal concerts and movies. The Chapel Shelter, a historic picnic shelter formerly a Presbyterian church, was meticulously restored by the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy in 2008. This restoration included the creation of new trails, the planting of native trees and shrubs, and the removal of invasive species.
Looking to the future, the park plans to restore the historic Watson’s Cabin and continue the restoration of the Snyder’s Point natural area. The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, founded in December 1996, plays a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the park, ensuring that programs are offered, trees are planted, and capital projects are funded.
Riverview Park thrives thanks to the support of the community, and with continued backing, there is no limit to what can be achieved. For more information or to get involved, you can contact the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy at their South Side Office.

"One of the more peaceful and serene trails of Riverview. I truly love coming here and relaxing as there's so much to see on this trail !"
"Great trail for running, walking, and biking! It is currently under maintenance as of February 2023 but I can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s finished! If your wondering about MTB here, no trails are marked but if I had to say they would mostly be green with a few blue mixed in. Its also mostly technical trails and not jumps, but there are definitely some spots where you can get some air. Happy riding/hiking!"
"I truly enjoyed this trail. Some elevation, not wheelchair friendly or stroller friendly. Will most definitely return. This trail is located in Riverside Park."
"Beautiful little trail with lots of flowering trees, especially Eastern Redbud, in spring. Great for warblers! Trail is well-maintained and easy to follow. Lovely little gem tucked away in the city’s north side."
"This trail is beautiful. If you park your car where the trailhead sign is (drive around the park on the one way street and you'll eventually see the sign on the right hand side before you would curve around to the pool), there are several directions you can hike. (1)Completely straight will take you up a small hill and into a clearing and loop around. (2)Straight then veer to the left up a steep hill is another option. (3)Turn right immediately; two options are then left or right. Left takes you around a narrow path. Right goes down a big hill. (4) Turn left immediately; two options of left and right. Left will eventually loop you all the way to the playground, if you have a good sense of direction. Right goes up a hill. I've hiked it with my toddler, who has good stamina. We will do a few trails in one visit. Steep drops on some of the trails, so take care!"
