The Hickories Museum

The Hickories Museum is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the rich history of Lorain County, with the aim of educating and inspiring both present and future generations. As a respected hub of learning, we encourage people of all backgrounds to discover and develop a passion for history. Our mission is to engage visitors in relevant study and educational experiences, making history a meaningful part of their lives.

Our work is supported by Ohio Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the federal ARP Act of 2021. We also offer a range of publications that delve into the history of Elyria and Lorain County, including:

"Built in 1894 for $100,000.00 when most ho.es cost around $2000.00. It was a mansion befitting of a King, designed by highly successful inventor Arthur Garford ,Elyria,Ohio inventor and producer of the GARFORD AUTOMOBILE at his Clark Street factory here in Elyria! Now the home of Rigid Tool Company."

"Very interesting place with tons of history. The guy who guided my tour was great although I can't remember his name. I would have liked to been able to see the whole house though and they could tidy it up a bit. IDK, maybe they were doing some arrangements or something ,anyways worth the tour"

"I have been a member of the historically society's for over 25 years and have become very familiar with the Hickories. If you are interested in unusual residential architecture, or would enjoy seeing what life was like for a wealthy family around the year 1900, then a visit here should be on your agenda. Better yet, for a small sum you can become a member of the society and enjoy all of its exhibits and activities!"
