About the Business

Parrots in Paradise is a sanctuary located in Kealakekua, Hawaii, dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and rehoming of displaced parrots. Our mission is to provide a safe and loving environment for parrots who have been re-homed due to unfortunate circumstances. We educate the public on proper care for exotic birds and work to find healthy and nurturing homes for those in need.
With over 80 friendly and non-aggressive parrots, visitors have the opportunity to interact with these beautiful birds and learn about the challenges faced by displaced parrots worldwide. Our sanctuary offers a 2-hour excursion for ages 3 and up, with a tax-deductible donation required. Donations of bird toys, local veggies, and other supplies are greatly appreciated and help support our work.
Volunteers play a crucial role in our organization, helping to rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home parrots in need. Both adults and juniors (13 and up) are welcome to apply for volunteer opportunities, with training provided on-site. Your support, whether through donations or volunteering, helps us continue our lifesaving work for parrots in Hawaii and beyond.
Join us in making a difference for these beautiful creatures and become a part of the Parrots in Paradise community. Your support is truly appreciated, and we thank you for helping us care for and protect these amazing birds.

"Scam Alert! This place has no intentions of adopting out parrots. They just want your $75. I'm seriously interested in adopting, and I received no commitment or guarantee. Adoption was gonna happen. After 2 emails, this was their response. "We have been rescuing parrots on the Big Island for 30 years. It’s obvious to me that you know nothing about the crisis of unwanted parrots on the Big Island. I personally feel uncomfortable and unwilling to assist you in finding a parrot from our sanctuary when you are so concerned about not even wanting to donate to our sanctuary for a two hour visit. We wish you well in finding a parrot elsewhere, but please do not contact me in the future." Apparently I'm missing something. I look constantly for Birds needing adoption. I won't support breeders. If there is such a big Crisis and she has over 120. Shouldn't she be happy to see a serious adopter. I don't want to donate. I want to Adopt! Isn't that better than a donation? SCAM! There a non-profit scam making plenty at $75 a pop. Apparently some birds are sponsored by previous owners as well. Rude Be'itch! See other 1 stars. Not worth it."
"This place is such a gem! Throughout the tour, Jerry introduced us to every single resident bird, told us their history, about the species, and answered any questions we had. A number of times we were able to enter some of the flight cages and interact with the parrots, feed them nuts, and give them some cuddles. :) The family that owns and runs the sanctuary hosts of a variety of parrot species that are all rescues/pets that have had to be surrendered for one reason or another. They do a good deal of educating the public about keeping parrots as pets and it is clear that all of the birds here are extremely happy and well taken care of. Please consider supporting this sanctuary and visiting or donating, it takes a lot of hard work to keep it up and running!"
"It was a great all around experience. Beautiful bird, nice facility and knowledgeable host. Jerry was very good, leading us around and answering questions. Lots and lots of birds. Landscape and trees also were interesting and Jerry sr. is very knowledgeable about them. Only thing to note, the road up there is narrow and small branches may brush your car."
"I stumbled upon this gem on Google Maps when exploring things to do in Kona. Parrots always intrigued me and I thought a tour in a parrot sanctuary will be a nice change of pace from the typical Hawaii activities. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect but this tour was one of the best experiences my wife and I had in Hawaii! This parrot sanctuary held over 100 parrots of many different species, from small cute ones like the Lovebirds to huge ones like the Hyacinth Macaw (a very rare and beautiful blue parrot). Jerry was our tour guide and he showed us around all the parrots. He shared unique facts about parrots, and also each parrot's unique history and personalities. There were also hands on experiences with the parrots: I've had parrots climb on my shoulders, and even flying onto my arm to get a treat. Parrots can live very complex lives due to many factors, and there are more to them than what's shown on TV & movies. Thank you Jerry and your family for starting this sanctuary and taking care of these amazing birds. I hope to come back to visit again one day!"
"Today was a beautiful day to tour Gerald’s parrot sanctuary. This property is stunningly beautiful, Gerald has incredible knowledge and we THOROUGHLY enjoyed ourselves. Gerald shares the backstory of every bird at the sanctuary and discourages (rightfully so) pet ownership of these wild animals. What a beautiful place for the parrots to live out their lives with love and care. Kissi is the true star of the sanctuary. Her name says it all. She loves to kiss, cuddle and nuzzle you with her soothing little clicks. The hyacinth macaws are STUNNING! And feeding them their walnuts was a really treat for me. I left with a beautiful hyacinth feather and a wonderful memory of our tour. HIGHLY recommend this excursion. Suggestion to the sanctuary: Put up a few signs letting guests know that they can sponsor a bird monthly. “Sponsor Kissi for $300 monthly donation” If people know about it, I bet they will do it :-) Just an idea."
