About the Business

Fred Archer Center

The Fred Archer Center, located at 1665 South La Cholla Boulevard in Tucson, Arizona, is a neighborhood center offering a variety of programs and activities for individuals of all ages. The center will be closed for maintenance from March 29 to May 27, but the pool will remain open for use.

For children ages 5-11, there is an after-school program that includes games, arts and crafts, sports, nutrition, music, movies, field trips, reading time, dance, and more. The program runs Monday through Friday from school dismissal to 6 p.m.

For youth ages 7 and older, the center offers activities such as table tennis, computers, billiards, video games, and board games on select days throughout the week. A facility pass or daily fee is required for access.

During the summer, a supervised teen program is available for youth who have completed 5th grade. This program includes social interaction, games, cooking, community involvement, and special activities. A payment plan is available for participants, and discounts are offered to City of Tucson residents.

Seniors can join the Senior Club membership, which includes access to the gym (certification required), swimming pool, field trips, special events, and daily activities such as library time, games, Bingo, guest speakers, arts and crafts, and more. The center also offers chair exercise classes and a nutrition program in partnership with the Pima County Council on Aging.

The Fred Archer Center has a rich history, with the area surrounding it first settled by African American homesteaders in the 1930s and 1940s. The center was completed in 1978 and renamed in 1988 after its first director, Fred Archer, who was actively involved in the Tucson community until his passing in 1988. The center aims to provide social and recreational experiences to the public, primarily residents of the general area.

"They need a computer lab for children who can't afford Internet for school. Paying the day fee x3 and we are already low income is hard. Thank goodness my local rec center doesn't charge wish they all had some program to help with that. Nice facility but we can't afford to use it."
