About the Business
Octagon Shelter, located at 801 Truxell Road in Peninsula, Ohio, is a unique institution offering two rustic shelters for rent in the Virginia Kendall Unit of Cuyahoga Valley National Park. These shelters, constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, are made of American chestnut and locally quarried sandstone. Both shelters are fully accessible and offer a picturesque setting near the Ritchie Ledges, hiking trails, and a large field.
The Ledges Shelter, located at 701 Truxell Road, features two fireplaces, indoor and outdoor picnic tables, and a large grill, accommodating up to 75 people. The Octagon Shelter, located at 801 Truxell Road, is named for its shape and can accommodate up to 50 people. During the summer months, the walls of the Octagon Shelter are removed, providing an open-air experience.
Both shelters offer limited electricity for household appliances, drinking water from May 1 to September 15, and year-round restrooms with flush toilets. Reservations can be made online through the national reservation system. Music is permitted at a maximum of 60 decibels, and groups using a public address system may require a Special Use Permit.
Please note that the fireplaces are the only source of heat in the shelters, and wood is provided for guests to start their own fires. "Such a beautiful shelter back in it's own private area. Nice fireplaces, restrooms and utility sinks. Just remember if booked to pick up keys. I booked so long ago I forgot about that and thankfully a maintenance man was there and opened it up for us, very kind. Will rent this shelter again so cozy."
