"I’m a bit conflicted in writing this review - I really wanted to like this hotel and had high hopes for our stay. All of the staff we encountered were professional, courteous, and pleasant for the most part, but little things just kept adding up over the duration of our 2-night stay that ended up frustrating my partner and me to the point of no return. Let me explain. While we were driving to the hotel, I received an email stating that our reservation at Cara Cara that night had been cancelled due to inclement weather. After checking in, we stopped by the restaurant to inquire about the situation; however, the host had no idea what we were talking about. He literally had to take a photo of my cancellation email to text it to another coworker, who ended up being as equally confused as he was. Turns out the restaurant was in fact not closing early, so no harm no foul. However, the lack of coordination and miscommunication from the staff was slightly concerning; little did we know it was a premonition of things to come. For example, later that night, we had to make multiple, repeated calls to the front desk for them to bring us ice to our room. Again, not the biggest deal, but bear with me. On the second day, we left our water bottles outside our rooms for them to be refilled/replaced (as instructed by the valet who helped take our bags to our room the day prior), but never received any replacements. We then had to make an additional call for more water. Another slight annoyance was housekeeping’s continued knocks at the door, even though we told them we wouldn’t need turn-down service (they must have come to the door knocking at least 3 times). A little later that afternoon, we ordered Uber Eats, and what should have been a simple drop off to our door became anything but. The front desk ended up intercepting our food from the delivery driver and calling our room to ask if they should take it to our door, to which we accepted. We waited about 15 minutes, took a look outside our door, but the food wasn’t there. It took us another additional call to the front desk before the food finally got delivered to us. That night, I was getting so fed up with calling the front desk that I ended up searching for an ice machine, but couldn’t find one. Back to the front desk I went. On our third and final day, we checked out and left our bags with the front desk in order to walk to a brunch spot nearby. While we were at brunch, they tried putting our luggage in my car, but since I left my car in valet mode (which locks the trunk), they were unable to put it inside the trunk. When we got back to the valet we discovered that instead of leaving our luggage at the front desk they ended up stuffing everything into the back seat, scuffing, marring, and dirtying the white leather interior of my car. This ended up being the final straw for me and really pissed me off, because now I ended up having to spend time cleaning the back seat with my partner when this whole situation could have been prevented. To add insult to injury, some parts of the leather were actually scratched and we were unable to remove them after trying to wipe it down. To sum it up, nearly our entire experience at this establishment left us feeling like we wished we could just do everything ourselves. I’m not sure if the issue comes down to a lack of training/critical thinking skills, or if the staff is just absent minded/doesn’t truly care, but each and any of the seemingly simple things that we needed throughout our trip felt so unnecessarily complicated and such a struggle honestly. Every single little thing just ended up being harder than it needed to be. This place is such a bad value, especially for the egregious prices they charge. To Proper Hotel - you’re a five-star establishment, do better. We most definitely won’t be back."
"This hotel was great. It’s a boutique hotel with a beautiful charm. The customer service was impeccable. They were welcoming and attentive. The room was on the very small side. There is a chair and table but everything is super tight. The bathroom was nice. There was a fridge inside the room with a mini bar that came in handy. All in all a great experience."
"We stayed at this hotel just a few days ago and it was awesome! Every single staff member was so kind and welcoming. Our room was so cute, clean and had a nice view. We did not have any issues with noise either! We found it to be very quiet. Sure, there was normal city noise, but it was never a problem. I also felt very safe with the valet / door guys around! I traveled alone one day via Uber, and they asked for the type of car and color to make sure I was getting into the right car. Another night when we were leaving, my friend and I were already in the Uber, and we were waiting for my husband to come downstairs to meet us. He ended up not seeing where we were, so I opened the window and waved him over. The Proper valet / door guys double checked with us that this guy walking over to get in our Uber was supposed to be there with us. I appreciated them showing concern! I highly recommend this hotel :)"
"Horrible stay. I've stayed multiple times at the Proper in Palm Springs and Santa Monica. They're good. This hotel is not. The rooms are small, stuffy with little to no ventilation, noisy (they gave me ear plugs when I checked in!), and the neighborhood/area is not good. On top of all this, when I tried to modify my reservation a week before checking in, I ended speaking with folks who I could barely understand, and they insisted on taking all my information multiple times (keeping me on the phone for a half hour each time for I don't know why). I asked both times for them to send me an email notification of the modification (change in dates). They said they would, it never happened. I had to call back and request to talk to the person at the front desk, who took a screen shot of her front desk computer so I'd have some confirmation. Unbelievably complicated for something so simple, and time consuming. When I got to the hotel, they said "sorry we're overbooked for your king room", and offered me a downgraded queen instead. Not a downgraded rate, just a downgraded room. When I went down the next morning to ask if a king was available, since that is what I paid for, I was made out to be the bad guy for asking to be in a room I paid for. And, I'm not that guy. I never take the time to write reviews. If I stay in DTLA again, I'll stay somewhere else. There are a lot more options that have to be better than this."
"Very swanky hotel. Neat design and architecture, and very clean. Services team was very helpful. Would recommend that the hotel doesn’t use body products with known allergens. Have a gluten allergy and was shocked to learn after realizing I was in a flare (eat very cleanly) that the lotion has wheat in it. Should’ve done more due diligence on reading labels but was not expecting that at an upscale hotel, and especially not one in LA of all places."
