About the Business

Rice Tank

Rice Tank is a primitive roadside campsite located in Big Bend National Park, Texas, United States. This campground offers beautiful views, solitude, and a small flat gravel space for camping next to your vehicle. There are no amenities such as shade or toilets provided, and the use of generators is prohibited in the backcountry. A Backcountry Permit is required to use any backcountry campsite, including Rice Tank.

Rice Tank can accommodate 2 vehicles and 6 people, but no horses are allowed. The maximum vehicle length is 25 feet, and trailers are considered vehicles for site capacities. The campsite is located along the Glenn Spring Road, 4.3 miles from the pavement. The road is rocky and maintained for high clearance vehicles only, so it's important to check with a ranger for current conditions.

Although there is no shade at Rice Tank, the sparse vegetation includes creosote and lechuguilla plants. Nearby, there is an old stock tank surrounded by vegetation and an earthen dam used to hold water for livestock during early ranching days. Visitors can also see an old corral and loading chute for livestock, as well as enjoy great views of the Chisos Mountains, Elephant Tusk, and Backbone Ridge.

To preserve the historic objects at Rice Tank, visitors are asked not to climb on fences or set up tents on the earthen dam. This campground is perfect for those seeking a remote and rugged camping experience in the beautiful landscape of Big Bend National Park.

"Nice remote private camping spot far off the main road. You can see vehicles go by the main gravel road, but not many people come out here. By reservation only. There is a water 'tank' (pond) here from the old cattle grazing days. I was tempted to hike into the tank, but probably best that I did not. Great views of the Chisos mountains to the west, you can take a long desert walk from here too. I did not see any bears, snakes, or havalinas, but they are around for sure. Lot's of birds."

"Rice Tank was very nice and secluded. Great view of mountains as the sun came up. Had a passer by, Mexican black bear, visit on his/her way back to higher altitudes. No issues with the bear, truly gust passing by. I had the great pleasure of seeing it."

"Beautiful views and would be great remote camping (permit required) in the late fall and really spring. Historical features currently under restoration."
