About the Business

Chinati Mountains State Natural Area is a 39,000-acre park located in Presidio, Texas, United States. The park features rugged peaks and steep canyons that tell the story of a volcanic eruption over 35 million years ago. The park stretches from low desert to part way up Sierra Parda, offering scenic and wild terrain with a 4,400-foot elevation change.

Native Americans have lived in the Chinati Mountains for over 8,000 years, leaving behind pictographs and petroglyphs. Mexican families ran small ranches in the area before Anglo ranchers arrived in the 1850s. Mines in the late 1800s yielded various minerals including silver, gold, and lead.

The park is now a spiritual retreat and wildlife sanctuary, home to a variety of plant and animal species typical of the lower Big Bend region. Baseline surveys have been conducted to identify sensitive areas for development, and a public use plan is in the works.

Visitors to Chinati Mountains State Natural Area can enjoy the diverse flora and fauna, as well as the rich history of the area. The park offers a unique opportunity to explore the Chihuahuan Desert ecoregion and learn about the geological and cultural significance of the region.
